Chad Orzel at Uncertain Principles is happy that there are Christians out there who are doing what he’s thought they should do for ages: in Take Action: God is Not a Republican. Or a Democrat, they’r admonishing partisan use of religion to garner votes.
Good for them. I think the only deity who would approve of the Republicans would be Cthulhu, and I think even Loki would be embarrassed to get caught in some partisan battle in America. The following quote from Pat Robertson, on the main page, is painfully revealing:
“I think George Bush is going to win in a walk. I really believe I’m hearing from the Lord it’s going to be like a blowout election in 2004. The Lord has just blessed him…. It doesn’t make any difference what he does, good or bad.”
– Pat Robertson, AP/Fox News, January 2, 2004
That’s quite counter to the spirit of the Take Back Our Faith people, who declare the following:
We will measure the candidates by whether they enhance human life, human dignity, and human rights; whether they strengthen family life and protect children; whether they promote racial reconciliation and support gender equality; whether they serve peace and social justice; and whether they advance the common good rather than only individual, national, and special interests.
Let’s hope their message gets out loud and strong enough to discredit the American theocrats.
It would seem that Dubya would like to change the name of the United States of America to the Protestant States of America. An American theocracy??? OMG!!! It sends chills!
Well, there’s always been a force calling for theocracy in America. But I guess it’s just that not enough people understand that democracy and theocracy are simply incompatible.
