Julia,

Not much, just as I imagine there's not much Cree in yours. But nonetheless, we have a lot in common despite those differences.

So maybe the wording of my generalization is misleading. We don't have one culture, we have a bunch of local cultures that are mostly -- but not wholly -- dissolved into a kind of shared and mutual meta-culture. Does that make sense? In other words, Saskatchewan and Ontario and BC probably have as much in common with North Dakota, or Michigan, or Washington State, as those places have with Texas, or Virginia, or California, respectively... at least in terms of popular culture and attitudes. It's coherent enough to refer to the area as having a shared general culture, if its coherent to do so about the US in general, which I think it is. (Quebec's culture, I'm not so sure of, but it felt distinctly North American to me. But since that's my only Francophone cultural experience, I can't say more.)

As for the pale redheaded kids with cascarones, I have to say that very few things these days seem "strange" to me, but I might find it enjoyably weird. Though I had to look up cascarones to know what the question meant.

How much Mexico is in your North American culture?

Would you find it strange to see pale, red-haired children smashing cascarones on each other's heads? :)

Kangmi: I haven't found any that are consistently quiet, not in Bucheon anyway. There was one in Iksan, and one in Jeonju, each near where I lived, but here, the only place I've found okay was the coffeeshop in Emart during the day, and I don't like to go over there.

EFL Geek,
Yeah, I might have a different opinion if I was awake early enough to go at 8am. Then again, I prefer independent coffeeshops, and those never opened before noon in Jeonju or Iksan. I haven't found a proper indie place in Bucheon.

Jade,

No worries, I'm used to being assumed American, and anyway, I'm of the opinion Canada is mostly like the US and we share a culture. We're not exactly the same, but Anglo-Americans and Anglo-Canadians similar enough to speak of a North American culture, I think.

Thanks, they're great questions!

oops! Sorry...how American of me to assume you were also American and not Canadian. I just fell into THAT stereotype. :)

Intriguing answers...and I feel I've gotten to know you better through this exercise, Gord!

ah.. but I love coffeeshops for getting work done. First I usually go around 8am and then the place is quiet until around 11. Second everyone is speaking Korean and if I'm not concentrating on what they are saying it's just white noise.

And I don't understand why you are dissing doggies in ballerina costumes...

I know what you mean about the coffee shops, but I used to frequent some quiet ones. Funny, I was just thinking about my favorite one today while brainstorming for a project. I used to walk up there every evening, to read, to write (letters, often). Great Vienna coffee, among other things. Usually I was alone, but sometimes friends would join me. I doubt it's still there, but when I return, I'll look for it anyway.
