Recovering In Agra

Well, here I am smack dab in the middle of getting better—I’m up and about again, which is more than I can say for last night. Ugh! I must have eaten something funny for breakfast, or maybe something just got into my mouth from dirty hands though I’ve been careful to wash them as often as possible. Who knows, but anyway, last night, after I realized that the Taj Mahal is closed Fridays, I wanted to go see it, but I was horribly ill. I was in a restaurant (Pizza Hut, no less, which I went to in order to avoid the food-poisoning scam) and I found myself food-poisoned anyway! Remember that scene of projectile vomit in the movie The Exorcist? Let’s just say I beat her, with double action. I pity whichever poor bastard whose job it was to clean up the bathroom, but it’s not like you can put both ends of your body over the mouth of the toilet at once. Ugh.

Anyway, today I changed my train ticket to tomorrow evening, the soonest ticket available, to make sure I got a chance to see the Taj Mahal. I mean, if I missed that I would feel like a total moron. But I shall probably finish all my sightseeing (apart from the Taj) today, so I am wondering now what I shall spend tomorrow afternoon doing. I really just hope I can find a nice quiet place to sit in the sun and drink iced tea and read my book, with a nice Western toilet available when I need it, which will probably be about once an hour at the rate I’m going.

Now I’m off to email Ritu and let her know I’ll be a day late into Delhi. All this running about. I tell you… I think it’ll be nice to sit and soak in the hot pool at the public bath near my house in Jeonju, really it will. It’s keeping me sane and calm as 80% of people I walk past scream, holler, bellow, or yell HELLO! at me and some even grab at my arm to haul me into their cycle- and auto-rickshaws. It wears on you after a while, and you get a little mean. But today I’ve hired a nice old fellow to be my cycle-rickshaw pilot. He’s recommended some good places to me, a restaurant that was in Lonely Planet and the best net place in Sadar Bazaar. Good old fellow, I’ll give him a nice tip for sure. Even with the weight I’ve lost, he has to work hard to get us moving after every stop.

Right, it’s time for me to go.
