Get Outta Here, Beanpole

A listmate from a discussion list for the magazine I write a column for, Cahoots, posted a link to an interesting article: Reuters carried a story titled Ban on skinny models shocks fashion world. The logic is not simply that teenagers emulate what they see on the runway, and go bulimic or anorexic as a result… but rather, it’s just that they want to portray “healthy body images” at the government-sponsored Madrid fashion week.

You know, you have to sit back and think about just how dysfunctional your civilization is when the demand that its iconic representatives of womanhood (which unfortunately are models) look healthy instead of “heroin chic”. The funniest bit is the (seemingly inescapable) appeal to rights and against discrimination:

“I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this tone of healthy beautiful women, but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer,” said Gould, Elite’s North America director, adding that the move could harm careers of naturally “gazelle-like” models.

When rich (mostly) white people start invoking rights and freedoms, and complaining of discrimination, you know you’re on the right track, is all I’ve got to say.
