Almost But Didn’t So Instead

I was thinking of heading into town to take in a lecture on North Korean propaganda, but decided I really didn’t feel like it, so instead I went out for dinner, had some coffee, and read most of the remainder of the October/November 2006 issue of F&SF (I’m trying to catch up on my subscription, and have only the Ryman novella left to go), plus a story for my crit group.

On the way home, I decided to stop by my office and print a couple of things out — another story for crit, and one of my own for editing purposes. I am experimenting with editing on paper, versus editing solely onscreen, to see what gets me better results. Anyway, while I was here, I realized that my office is a little bit of a mess right now, and so I decided to get it tidied up. It’s still not perfect, but it’s a lot better than it was — a year’s accumulation of scrap paper piled on the table was moved to a drawer, from which I can pull out chunks for sorting and printing on the back sides; abandoned assignments tucked away (to be sorted as well, either for filing or for trashing, during my office hours next month); some random magazines and books were tucked back onto their shelves, and so on.

Now the office is no longer in a state where I would be embarrassed to have a student visit. Whew. But I have still more cleaning a packing to do: I’m moving sometime in the next seven days! Okay, it’s within the same building, but still — it means packing all my stuff and cleaning up my apartment such that whoever moves in next will be happy and comfortable. I wish I knew exactly where I’ll be moving, and what day it will be available… that’d help me prepare, since I have to hire some people to move my fridge and dressers up there. (And I may just pay them to move the whole damned shebang up, if my boxes are looking too plentiful… but I don’t think it’ll be that bad, to be honest.)

Anyway, all of this goes to say, perhaps I should wander home and get a little more reading done, and, say, pack half my books. I still need to prepare for tomorrow…
