𝖪𝖾𝗏𝗂𝗇 𝖸𝗈𝗌𝗎𝖺 𝖳𝗋𝗂𝗈 , 𝖥𝖾𝖺𝗍uring 𝖩𝖺𝖼𝗈𝖻 𝖢𝗁𝗎𝗇𝗀

Tonight, I saw the Kevin Yosua Trio, with guest Jacob Chung at our local jazz venue, Jazzin Lab. It was a great show. 

Everyone played their asses off! As a would-be saxophonist, I paid close attention  to Jacob Chung’s playing, and man does the guy have chops. (I mean, I knew that from listening to his albums, but in person he’s just as much of a monster, albeit a sometimes soft-spoken one.) He has the kind of tone a lot of horn players would die for, and was a deeply inventive player. 

The bandleader, Kevin Yosua, was the bassist. He had a commanding presence on the bass, laying down a really firm foundation for the group. Likewise Hansen Arief, the drummer, did a great job not just adorning the beat, but also replying back-and-forth to the other soloists. 

Finally, pianist Rio Manuel blew me away. He was clearly having a great time playing,, and had the audience gasping at several points with his creativity at the keyboard. His enthusiasm was utterly infectious, and we were all on the edge of our seats waiting to see what trick he’d pull out of the hat next. 

Anyway, I’m grateful to the folks at Jazz Bridge Company and, as ever, Jazzin Lab for hosting so many great jazz groups here in Sejong.
