Yes. That’s right. Vernon, Florida. The famous, much-sought-after, out of print documentary about insane hicks in a small Florida town. Well, actually, my friend Heather ordered it. Given that the film has never actually been released on DVD, I’m quite certain it’s pirated (and the fact that it is a zone-free DVD just confirms my suspicion further), but I love it so much I don’t care… given that it’s a more accessible medium, given that the film is out of print in all media. I just hope the rip is good, or I’ll be pissed off. And if the rip …

Bad Music, Korean and Otherwise
Well, worth hearing anyway. It’s Korean: Unpleasantly (The Anthology) by The Pearl Sisters is the CD focused discussed in this page, which has a whole CD of tracks you can listen to. There’s also a page here on Korean Psychedelic and Acid Folk music… which is a subpage of a much bigger index of psychedelic music from around the world, but I’ll let you follow the thinks at your leisure and according to your curiosity. Links from a post on Metafilter by dhoyt. And speaking of bad music, I”m never ever going to play one of these.
Wizard People
Check out Wizard People. It’s some kind of weird alterna-art audio CDs you play along with a Harry Potter movie to get a different artwork altogether. I’ll have to try this sometime.
On Pharoah Sanders
This morning, while listening to the album Tauhid, I was suddenly interested in Pharoah Sanders again, so I started looking him up online. I found a lot of junky pages but a few good things. Here’s one of them, a good little interview with Pharoah Sanders at JazzTimes. I mean, with an excerpt like this, how can you resist? “Can we talk?” I ask Pharoah Sanders. “OK, long as we don’t get into the John Coltrane thing,” laughs Master P. “I don’t know what I can say, that’s all over with.” It’s gotta be tough moving out from the shadow …
History of Bollocks
Over at SPIKED you can read review of a perhaps-tedious but interesting-sounding book of bollocks-bashing: A brief history of bollocks. It looks to be the sort of thing I’d write if I were a grumpy Brit man in late middle age. And I didn’t know that damnable creationism was such a problem in Britain. I thought it was only the waterheads of America who believed in that trash. Ah well…
Morning Music
So I’m listening to the soundtrack from Black Cat White Cat, a film by Emir Kusturica, a wonderful director. I really need to find his DVDs and buy them. Or something. Anyway, the lyrics to this one song are hilarious… or is it the delivery? I love the way the singer apologizes for the quality of his English, and then starts proclaiming, “All we need is a long wehicule, a long wehicule, a long wehicule, to go!” He means vehicle, but you know, accents and all. It’s hilarious and wonderful. Druggie gangsters, gypsy love (with a stunning gypsy girl of …
A Song About Peace
I realize I’m ranting about it yet again when I hear Lime’s voice over the phone, quietly, saying, “Okay, but Gord, now it’s too much. You sound crazy!”
Michael Moore Interview
Here’s a piece from The Observer about an interview with Michael Moore. It about fits my gut instincts regarding him, both the good and the bad…
On Bad Priests
Here’s a book review of a book that looks pretty interesting: Fallen Order by Karen Liebreich. Pope John Paul II has kept noticeably quiet on the subject of Catholic priests who sexually abuse children. But in 2002, after high-profile cases in Europe and the United States, he was moved to acknowledge the problem – briefly. Paragraph 38 of his annual Holy Thursday letter alluded to priests who succumb to “the most grievous forms of the mysterium iniquitatis [mystery of evil] at work in the world”. Such behaviour puts other priests in a bad light, said the Pope, without mentioning what …
