More Films

It must be some kind of overdose or something. In the last four days, I’ve seen four more films that I want to write about here. The first two were Korean movies I watched with Lime: 오!브fk더스 (Oh! Brothers) was a comedy that was, as Korean comedies go, one of the better ones I’ve seen. It was a kind of goofy version of Rain Man, but the long-lost brother had Progeria, not autism, meaning he was twelve years old but had the body of an adult, and was put to work by his brother collecting money for the mob. I …

Save The Green Planet

… is the name of the last movie I saw (imdb | excellent review). It was a title I’d run across before but never happened to pick for watching, but Lime and I are getting to the point where we’ve seen many of the films we wanted to see at our regular DVD-room house, so we asked the girl running the front desk whether it was a good movie. She replied, enthusiastically, that it is, in her opinion, the best Korean movie ever, and that it was sad that it couldn’t have gotten a little more funding so that it …

Films I’ve Seen of Late

Writing a novel is the kind of work one can do for a few hours at a time, and then one needs a break. For me, it’s a kind of process of letting my own ideas percolate, and they often do that best when I am occupied doing something else. Also, while I’ve been writing this, I’ve had an incredibly hard time getting into reading fiction. Nonfiction has been easy, but I crave storylines and yet fiction simply hasn’t drawn me in. Even the wonderfully funny and tragic novel The Comedians by Graham Greene hasn’t succeeded in drawing me in. …

Paani

Hear of this new Indian movie? Water, the movie. A film by Shekhar Kapur: Thirty-five years in the future in a city of 20 Million, when the Water Wars have begun between those that have it and those that don’t, a young, impetuous renegade falls in love with the one girl he seemingly can’t have. Ah, yes, I dooooo want to see that. Water wars, man. Water wars!

Wong Kar-Wai rocks

I wondered what this movie was all about when I saw it advertised in the Now Playing poster racks near the theaters here in Jeonju. I’m quite sure I’d have understood nothing if I’d seen it at a cinema here, but this trailer for Won Kar-Wai’s 2046 is very, very promising. I love his work already, and I can’t wait till this is out on DVD so I can check it out at a local DVD-방.

Movies I’ve watched recently

During holidays, one such as myself has a much greater amount of time to devote to such a pastime as movie-watching. Well, I’ve gotten through a few films this holiday and thought I would share my thoughts: Trainspotting. Okay, it was the third time I’ve seen it since its release. This things that hit me the strongest were the absolute sarcasm of the soundtrack—the way it’s used with the images, something I’d forgotten about—and the way that still shots are used near the beginning and at a couple of moments later on. It reminded me of some other films composed …

Remember Earth2? Dead Like Me canceled… and Rebecca Gayheart’s sorta sad story

Yes, Earth2, that ill-fated one-season SF TV show (imdb) (fansite 1 2 3 in-dept-critical-analysis-page rpg-fansite). Okay, it wasn’t as brilliant a show as it perhaps could have been, but it was at least interesting enough to grab my attention in 1994. I remember a few years later, people were still whining online about the cancelation of the show, and even several years after its cancelation, they were trying to agitate for it to go back on the air with a new season. I had desperately wanted to watch it again, and looked online. Someone who’d taped all the espisodes was …
