While the selection of shows is disappointingly small — cheesy Pat Metheny, cheesy Japanese jazz-fusion, or a potentially cool concert with Joe Sample — those of you in Seoul might nonetheless might be interested in seeing something at the upcoming Seoul Jazz Festival. One interesting thing is that some of the local opening acts actually look better than some of the foreign ones. Baritone Insanity
I’ve decided I simply must get all of the Hamiet Bluiett Baritone Nation albums. This page has some audio samples that finally convinced me that I need CDs in which the majority of the band is playing baritone saxes. (More samples of another Baritone Nation CD here.) This is some heavy stuff. I like it. I shall have to order these or something, since I doubt any music shop will have ’em just sitting on the shelf.

Kang Tae Hwan, on bugsmusic. Not easy listening, in any sense of the word, but pretty fascinating that a band like this exists at all in Korea. It’s right up there with the German freejazz guys who used to pass through my hometown during Festival time. Where and when can I see these guys (him and his free jazz trio) play?
