My Brain is Different by Monzusu

This entry is part 1 of 23 in the series 2023 Reads

I’m continuing with posting about the books I’ve read. The tag has changed to #booksread2023, but not much has changed: the posts get published with some lag—though I’m trying to shorten the lag a little, too. Monzusu’s <em>My Brain is Different</em> is a manga about developmental difficulties and cognitive challenges. I started reading it out of curiosity, and found it interesting enough to finish. The first part of the comic tells the author’s own story of how she discovered her own ADHD after her child’s diagnosis. (This is, I’m sure, a familiar story: a lot later-in-life diagnoses seem to follow …

Shiver by Junji Ito

This entry is part 2 of 23 in the series 2023 Reads

I’m continuing with posting about the books I’ve read. The tag has changed to #booksread2023, but not much has changed: the posts get published with some lag—though I’m trying to shorten the lag a little, too. I’d had a reservation request on file with the local branch of the National Library for Shiver since sometime in early December. It took someone a long time to get it back to the library, apparently. I assume it was in a pile with some lengthier books, because personally it took me less than 24 hours to finish this one. Shiver is a collection of …

Sandman Omnibus Volume 1 by Neil Gaiman (et. al)

This entry is part 3 of 23 in the series 2023 Reads

I’m continuing with posting about the books I’ve read. The tag has changed to #booksread2023, but not much has changed: the posts get published with some lag—though I’m trying to shorten the lag a little, too. This time, I’m discussing the first half of the Sandman series. I should count that as multiple graphic novels, but, eh, whatever.

Swords Against Wizardry by Fritz Leiber

This entry is part 5 of 23 in the series 2023 Reads

As always, I’m posting a little after finishing the book in question. In this case, just a day after. Incidentally, the volume I’m reading from is the one I used in the header, the Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks edition of The First Book of Lankhmar, but I’m counting it as four separate “books” because, hey, humor me. I have a kid, I’m slow and it makes me feel a bit better about my limited reading progress! (And that is how these collections were originally published.) I’ve been reading all the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser books in slow motion, it seems. I …

Beyond the Burn Line by Paul McAuley

This entry is part 9 of 23 in the series 2023 Reads

Like other reads, this one is being posted a little while after I’ve finished it. Not too long, I hope, but that depends on how busy I get, I suppose. I read this because it was recommended for a group read on one of the Discords I’m on. I was among the slowest to finish reading it, but I am glad I did.

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier and Sheets by Brenna Thummler

This entry is part 10 of 23 in the series 2023 Reads

Like all the posts in my 2023 reads list, this comes at a lag, meaning I read this a while ago.  I recently read a couple of comics aimed at younger readers. Basically, I stumbled onto them at the library while waiting for my son to pick out some comics, and figured I’d give them a shot, as a contrast to the more challenging reading I’ve got on the go at the moment. They’re interesting in different ways.  Raina Telgemeier’s Ghosts is about a pair of sisters who move to a town with a notable ghost population. The story is …
