I asked this week’s F5 Question: Sometime in the last few years, I crossed a couple of great divides. For one thing, I stopped being depressed about my life. For another, I completely changed my dietary habits and my attitude toward exercise. Both of these are major changes that I never thought possible, and having made them, I feel somewhat of a discontinuity from the person who, for so long, waited to cross those divides. What are the five greatest divides that you’ve crossed so far in your life? Here I go again, getting myself into trouble. I’ll see if …

Questions for my Future Self
This week’s Friday Five is from Rob of About Pip. As he says, it’s a “time travel one”: If you could travel forward in time and meet yourself for a drink or a coffee somewhere, what are the five things you’d ask yourself about how your life turned out? That’s an interesting question. I assume, if I am going to travel into the future to see myself, that I also remember, as an old man, having traveled into the future to see myself. Otherwise, of course, the answers would be all meaningless because I’d be potentially changing the direction of …
Snobberies In The North American Diaspora
This week Adam provided a question at the last minute. It goes a little like this: I was recently involved in an online discussion of Role Playing Games, and one participant began rhapsodizing about the latest Final Fantasy game for the Playstation 2. The rest of the participants in this discussion were old-school, pencil-and-paper gamers, and the sneer in response to that one guy’s description of a video game as an RPG was similar to the reaction you’d get for bringing a bottle of “Night Train” to a wine tasting. So here’s what I want to know, my Sinful Little …
On Happiness (And Joy)
This week’s Friday Five comes to us courtesy of that wondrous Green Booger, Laura: For the past few years I’ve been compromising my hopes for a career and job I enjoy in preference to work a job that can relocate me to different countries and cultures. The exchange hasn’t really paid off as I’ve spent a lot of time feeling miserable about the job. However, I’m about to play a gamble, which, if it pays off, wouldn’t only get me to work into an exotic culture (namely Asia) and in a job which I actually want to do. If it …
Gord’s Greatest Fuck-Ups
This time on Friday Five Rob writes: Ok here you go, not too profound but it might get a laugh: What are the five most irredeemably stupid things you have done, so far. I mean things that had you change your name to Mr/Mrs/Miss Thick Astwoshortplanks, no face saving possibilities, no head in the sand denial helped and no ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ solutions. Come on, cough up. Rich description is required. Ha. It’s hard to keep it down to just five events. Here are some of the more definitive ones. The Experiment. This one probably comes to mind …
