Okay, okay, I’m a bad person…

Yesterday, I didn’t just get T-shirts. I also got two Chuseok presents, one from Lime and one from the University. (The one from Lime was a set of high-capacity rechargeable batteries for my camera, which is a great present and which I’m charging up at the moment.)

The present from the University is the one that made me think of myself as a bad person. You see, it was a gift-pack of Bertolli Olive Oil, with three bottles of the stuff — two bottles of “Original”, and one bottle of “Gentile”. Now, in Korea these days, people are thinking about health a lot more, concerned with how to eat better and so on, and so olive oil is becoming a relatively popular product around here. In fact, I usually use organic olive oil, and I get it at E-mart, which for those of you outside Korea, is like getting decent, quality, organic pesto (with sundried tomatoes in it) at Wal-Mart… it’s an indicator of something.

But when I saw the bottle, first I thought, “Huh?” and second, I thought…

“Well, Bertolli is Italian, and the Catholic Church is centered in Italy…” and then some amusing mafia story plot wobbled into my head. It’s worth noting my current employer is a university run/administrated by the Church.

Really, I do appreciate the olive oil. I’ll be using it with gusto. I just cannot help but think in terms of the most interesting story plot imaginable…
