Adrian On Religion
I highly recommend Adrian’s post at Mssv titled On Religion. Thoughtful thoughts from a interesting atheist point of view, one I generally agree with, and more and more as I think about it over the years. (I’ll be referencing this when I post about what I said in my Popular Cultures in English Speaking Countries class when we discussed the concept of “the White Man’s Burden” and colonialism and racism in historical and modern Australia.)

Great Review of a Book I’ll Never Read
Kingbaeksu has a review that basically eviscerates, with clear, sensible logic, that “What’s So Good About Korea, Maarten?” book that’s been on shelves for a while. I was put off by the white guy wrapped in the Korean flag (you can see the cover at the link above) and the contents look pretty poor too. Repeating the blather you’ve heard from friends is no way to write a book. A blog, maybe, but not a book. However, there are some good books recommended at the bottom of the page. Ask, Receive
Lately, I have thought about asking whether anyone reading this site knew of films about Indians that are not Bollywood films. What do you know? Bruce Sterling recently posted a link to filmholic, where I found links to some titles! Easy as that! And worth viewing, for a first pass, isthe film linked here, which is “Pria”, a story about an Indian-Canadian girl who tries to lose her accent in order to meet the boy of her dreams. I’m considering playing it for students who worry so much about sounding like a “native speaker”.
You Spent HOW MUCH?!?!?
Lost Nomad links to an article that says that Koreans spent 15 trillion won on English lessons last year. And that the results aren’t really showing. Eeek.
Me?
Sometimes I google my on name to see what other people (say, students) will see when they google my name. It kills me that in Korea, on one of the major music sites, I’m listed under “Indie Rock/Modern Rock”. It’s not surprising, since that’s the only kind of band I’ve played with here long, but I’d have never expected that. Would be nice to get “jazz” or “avant garde” added to that sometime while I still live here…
New Gadgety Thingo
Yeah, another plugin. The subtitle on the main page, right under “eclexys“, is now a rotating, random little snarky comment. I got a kick out of brainstorming them, though I think I may delete a few as time goes by and I get a better sense of what’s funny and what isn’t. If you hit reload, the tag line should change.
