The Real Story About Columbine

John Wendel sent me a link for a fascinating article by one Dave Cullen titled: The Depressive and the Psychopath – At last we know why the Columbine killers did it. . Seems as if everyone, from the popular media to the schoolmates, got it wrong. This wasn’t really a case of neglected kids, or amplified revenge. One kid was just depressed… the other, well, nobody could have done anything about him. So say the FBI psychiatrists. Go read it for the whole story.

17th Century Breast-Baring

It seems, according to the Discovery Channel website, as if women baring their breasts in public was neither objectionable nor unfashionable during several periods of British history, including the 1600s. Funny how conservatively we portray history, compared to how it really was. And they would be amused, wouldn’t they, at the shock and scandal over such a little, insignificant thing as Janet Jackson’s breast on TV? Take that, smug sense of modernity. Under cover marketing

Over at Metroactive, there’s an interesting article on Undercover Marketing. I don’t know what I think about teenagers being hired to do this kind of work, to be honest. Of course, the net may seem unruly now, but once we have a working reputation system in place (something like …

HUSBAND: Definitely not! WIFE: Why not – don’t you like being married? HUSBAND: Of course I do. WIFE: Then why wouldn’t you remarry? HUSBAND: Okay, I’d get married again. WIFE: You would? (With a hurtful look on her face.) HUSBAND: (Makes audible groan.)

So You Say You Want a Dog, Huh?

Over at Slate, Jon Katz has an article up about the romanticization of dogs, and about what you should think about before buying one. The article is called Finding the Perfect Dog – There is no such animal. So, stop looking, and it comes complete with a series of questions for reflection that you ought to think over before you go out and get a dog. The peddling of Perfect Dogs amounts to a multibillion dollar business in the United States. You’ll never see images of ugly dogs vomiting in the living room or terrorizing the letter carrier on dog food …
