Quixotic Kitten‘s page has a report about some sick pedophile bastard in Britain who had a blog. What he did was a horror and I think straight out castration is a good thing to consider. Maybe chopping off his hands, too. Or exile to an ice floe. Or put him in prison and announce what he did… he wouldn’t last long. Which is vicious, I know. He’s a human being, right? But… I don’t think all human life is sacred. I’m beginning to think some human life is unholy, and not to be respected. Ah well. Far more fascinating is …

Ten Things I’ve Done That You Probably Haven’t
Yes, it’s one of those blogging trends, but I like this exercise. It takes some thinking. 1. Read more than 150 pages of Ezra Pound’s The Cantos, and really, really enjoyed it. 2. Sent the majority of my phone-text messages during the last year in my third language. 3. Gotten lost in a slum in Agra at night. 4. Lost the ability to speak my second language, which at one point I could at least use passably in the workplace, through disuse. 5. Gone without any sleep for 72 hours (and only about 6 hours during 6 days) while copying …
Lunar New Year Book #5: North Korea: Through The Looking Glass
Book #5: North Korea: Through The Looking Glass (by Kongdan Oh and Ralph Hassig) is only slightly dated, having been published in 2000. I really valued this book for the glimpse it gave me into North Korea. Unlike a lot of texts that seem to focus on the political-economic historythe kind of “master narrative” that doesn’t much describe daily life for the majority of real people except in very abstract termsthis book excavates a lot of things from the testimonies of North Korean defectors (I think of them more as refugees from a hellish unreality) as well as piles of …
These nights (Rabbit in the Moon mix)
[Why cannot we say “these nights” as we do “these days”, to mean “lately”? I suppose it’s because technically, day can mean daytime, or it can include both daytime and night time, meaning full days of 24 hour stretches. But you would think that it would be possible, for when one talks of nighttime phenomena, to say instead “these nights”. Have you read Greg Egan’s novel, Quarantine? It’s an early work, and not as fully developed as later works, but it does have one thing that blew me away, and which has come to mind lately, whenever I go outside …
A Korean Joke, With Modifications
Okay, don’t ask for more details on how I got into this conversation, but I learned a funny Korean joke today. I only know it in English, but unlike many jokes, it translates extremely well. I’m embellishing it below. One day, a man went out to the mountains, with wishes in his heart, and climbed to the peak. Sanshin-ryeong, the mountain god, was impressed with the man’s vigour and spirited climbing, and could feel the man moved by his hopes and dreams. So the mountain god showed himself to the man, in all his massive, imposing splendour, and declared, “Hey, …
