The Egan Thief

“The Egan Thief” is a funny little (~2100 word) story that appeared in issue #4 (Fall-Winter 2007) issue of Rudy Rucker’s online sf zine Flurb. The story is here. There’s a funny story behind it, too. While at Clarion West in 2006, one of the writing-related anecdotes I shared with my classmates was my ill-fated second attempt at a novel, a draft called “Irreducible,” which I started working on in 1998 in Montreal, and didn’t give up on until after my trip to India in early 2004. Not Pinkeye / Dyscrasia in print!

Today is very up and down. Or, rather, down and up. I woke to find my eye very red, and secreting some kind of yellow gunk.  I showed Lime, who told me that pinkeye is going around. This scared me, but I went to my noon class knowing I would be going to the hospital for a short appointment anyway, and could probably get a little time with the opthamologist as well. The doctor looked at my eye,  and them got one of the nurses to put something in it to dilate the pupil and then looked in it again …

I’m one of those people who can ignore annoyances for a little while, but eventually gets fed up with them and decides to do something. And of course, for this I get headaches, most of the time. For example, the mailbox for the Foreign Professor’s residence on campus. Over the last few months, I’d noticed that checking mail had become somewhat of a chore, an annoyance, and finally an impossibility. The reason is that the damned mailbox — a single cubby on the wall of the security office in another building on the other side of campus — was completely …
