Friday Five

This week’s Friday Five question courtesy of William: Heinlein’s Number of the Beast theorizes that all realities, even ours, come from someone else’s imagination. And therefore, if you could learn to travel across dimensions it would be possible to find the worlds where every story occurred. The more fully realized story (and the better the story-teller) the more fully realized the world. So, What five fictional worlds would you like to visit once William perfects his inter-dimensional mini-van? I think I answered a question like this once on a mailing list, but the answer’s gone and anyway, I’m sure I’ll …

Really Not My Week

Okay, so the worst of the cold has subsided. I’m still sweating a bit at night, but nothing like what I was before. So, what joy awakened me this morning at 5am? The wisdom tooth I thought was doing fine, is apparently most unhappy where it is living. It’s started agitations on my lower jaw, and the gum is all swelled around it. And of course I have no ice. So now ice is freezing in my freezer. I’ll call a dentist I know in Iksan who can maybe recommend me to someone in Jeonju. I guess I simply need …

Genetic Engineering And Human Milk

Dairy giant Fonterra has bought the rights to use certain bits of human DNA… Does this disturb you? It doesn’t really bother me. After all, most humans are mildly allergic to non-human milk, but you’re never going to find a human-milk industry in mainstream agriculture on Earth, and any images of one are strictly for propaganda use. Yes, it’s a nasty image. Look at it up close, you can do that too if you want, and you should. And then remind yourself that it’s a dramatic bit of propaganda. There will be no human milk-farms, not in the next couple …

오늘은 내 한국어 블러그 보고 생각 하고 마비막 생각에는, 고드 바보이다! “아프다” 써야되요. 앞 = in front of.

Technologies That Deserve To Die

Bruce Sterling has published a list over at MIT’s Technology Review, of Ten Technologies That Deserve to Die. You should especially look at the comments, there. I’m among them, but not one of the majority… most people are shrieking and wailing about how nasty and wrong and stupid they think Sterling is. Hm. I don’t get the frenzy. They must feel threatened.

Rove, hm?

A depressing look at the mechanics of things inside the White House… I don’t know what to say or think about this for now, but the angry Rove described in that article sounds like someone who would have leaked info like what happened in the Wilson/Plame scandal. Rather sad.

Should I be so shocked

Should I be so shocked to see something as sensible as this in, no kidding, a Moby Tour Diary entry? ok, so some ne’er-do-wells in the bush administation might have broken a very serious law and revealed the name of an undercover cia operative as a way of getting revenge on the cia operative’s husband. the cia operative’s husband had issued a report that said that saddam hussein wasn’t actively pursuing enriched plutonium for the making of nuclear weapons. so apparently some people in the white house called some journalists to reveal this man’s wife’s name, as she’s an undercover …

Finally Something Beyond Partisanism!

I’ve longed to find something in the American debate that isn’t ideologically crippled by being “Left” or “Right”… and while I don’t know how easily its demands could come about, I think that this article, The wages of luck, by Matthew Miller, is at least something that doesn’t try to be left or right, but calls for some kind of consensus between the parties for sorting out America’s problems. Now if only I knew what to suggest for Canada.
