This is just a small update to note that I’m doing very well. Yes, I failed to win the Campbell Award, but I was happy to congratulate David Anthony Durham in person (and tease him about his, er, tiara). The WorldCon was a blast, and my trip leading up to it has also been. A BLAST. I’m off to Toronto tomorrow, and I’ll write more about the trip on the train assuming I’ll be able to get wifi enroute, which is what Via Rail claims. (Dangerous, since I have some other writing I need to get done!) So, more update …

Facebook Rumors of my Winning an Award have Been Greatly Exaggerated
So I posted a thank-you list to an unlinked page on my blog so I could mention it during the 1 minute long “speech” I’d be getting if the incredible does happen… …because one NEVER knows, right? Then the page (not post, page) got crossposted to my Facebook feed by some automated thing I installed ages ago. Ooops. If you’re confused, so was I. Argh! Thank goodness my sister called me. The results doesn’t start getting announced in the big ceremony for a whole two more hours folks, and I’m betting on whoever won the airplane fight. (But hope springs …

Launch Pad Last Day
It’s the last day of Launch Pad, so I’m playing catch-up. This is not all the media that will be coming from it, just some of it. More will be coming, especially photographs. But for now, here are some videos shot by novelist and videographer Stacey Cochran. The first one is before the cut, and a bunch more are in the extended post: [kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/eF3QE6YEeXc” width=”425″ height=”344″ allowfullscreen=”true” fvars=”fs=1″ /]
Launch Pad Vids
Having a great time here at the Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop in Laramie, Wyoming. Wish you were here? Well, some of the lectures are being posted online. Here are a couple of yesterday’s, courtesy of Stacey Cochran: [kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/rfKmfWYwzLo” width=”425″ height=”344″ allowfullscreen=”true” fvars=”fs=1″ /] [kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/jD0g0vbX3VE” width=”425″ height=”344″ allowfullscreen=”true” fvars=”fs=1″ /] And here are some useful links to useful resources, including the slides for a number of Mike Brotherton’s lectures.
“Fly My Voice” by 뷰렛
The band I used to play in actually did a gig at this festival, same day that Biuret did this performance… but I didn’t know, and got into the band not long ago. Funny, huh? I like this song, though I like the album version better… [kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/wIjpvR4RfAI” width=”425″ height=”344″ allowfullscreen=”true” fvars=”fs=1″ /]
Coordination…
It helps, when making big trips to see many people, to coordinate stuff. This week’s visiting is somewhat uncoordinated, and that means people are all scrambling and I’m getting double-booked and stuff. If I haven’t emailed you back yet, it’s because I was responding to an even more dire backlog of email. I should have a couple of days of quiet soon, when I get to Boulder, so I’ll get back to a lot of people then. As for now? Been hanging out with Ben in San Francisco. This is the guy:
San Franxaustion
Am in San Francisco. Ready to drop. A crisis with a friend prevented me getting much done over the weekend… like, booking a room, or getting friends’ phone numbers, or any other preparations I wanted to get done. But I’m here, and after a nap I should be good to go.
이별
This month’s theme in my life is 이별, or farewells. I spent the last evening in Korea — for this stint, anyway — with a couple of the closest friends I’ve ever had, and saw them off this morning. A few weeks ago, a very different 이별 made entirely of words and of emotions so enormous I cannot speak them in so frail a voice as bodies have. A few weeks ago I wrote of grace, and of having grace in partings and in changes. I wrote lovely words, and strangely I have learned that when one speaks in pretty …
Books, Books, Books
For those keeping track (and I will have to update the site soon, but not today): The Year’s Best SF 26 edited by Gardner Dozois is available as of a few days ago, and contains my story, “Lester Young and the Jupiter’s Moons’ Blues.” My story Pahwakhe also got an Honorable Mention too… (I don’t know if anything else did, I haven’t seen the book yet as I’m all the way over in Korea). (Seeing my name in that list of authors blew my mind… me? On a list with those people, each of which is… wow. Blew my mind. …
