Chainsaw Micro Graphic Novel
If you’ve ever wanted to try writing a graphic novel, you can, over at monochrom micro graphic novel. The site’s owner explains: One day in Autumn of 2004 I found a heap of old cardboard boxes and other discarded packaging material in my grandfather’s shed. Among it was a box for a chainsaw. On the back of it there was this peculiar sequence of drawings in black and white. I looked at it for a while but to be honest, I couldn’t make any sense of it. Commissioned art printed on the back of the box for chainsaws, only to …
Sick People Part II
If you are wondering what’s the deal with the blog silence: I’ve been getting a LOT of physio and sitting at the computer desk for more than 20 minutes at a time causes me pain. I’m working on the last part of my portion of camp preparations. Lime’s eye got weird yesterday, and prior to that she’d been coughing like mad. I am making my way to the physiotherapist now, to see whether my condition warrants a shot of muscle relaxants or just more agonizing stretches for the next few weeks. I sure hope whatever is decided, I’ll be okay …
Unbridled Anger
So downstairs there was some idiot hollering at the Gwallishil Ajeoshi. Gwallishil Ajeoshi: this guy’s someone I’ve mentioned before, an older man who is something of a cross between a watchman, an ineffectual gatekeeper, and an information source. I asked him for a phone number for a repairman when the heating system was all screwed up in my flat. I popped down to ask him why the water was shut off one day. He gives hell to people who don’t dispose of their garbage properly. I can’t say for sure what the drunk guy was yelling at him about, but …
Anyone Feeling Santa-Like?
If you are, then I assure you, I’ve been mostly nice. And look at these two t-shirts (this one and the first one on this page) that I’d love to have. If there’s no Santa out there, I may have to mug someone with a credit card.
Sick People
Well, here I am at home. Lime’s come over, and she has a nasty, nasty cough, and I finally convinced her to try my old remedy: inhaling steam from a hot bowl of water. Well, she convinced herself to do it this way: she put a green tea bag into it and informed me that the steam would be good for her skin. “IT’S GREEN TEA!” she declared from under the towel that was holding in all that good steam for her to inhale. Later, in a plaintive tone, “It’s like a sauna…” Skin aside, I’m hoping it also helps …
Not to complain… but…
Well, first there was that new round of tonsilitis. And then the foot injury that I got because of the other ootinjury I got, so that some tendon or something goes squish to the right every time I put weight on my right foot. Now that that hurts a little less, my back is killing me again. What the hell is that, the coda to the symphony or something? I’m annoyed. So, for now, more stretches and physio (which, at $3 a pop, is quite affordable here in Jeonju). And less updating my site. Sorry all. I’ll be back to …
Urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.
No update for a little while, here, and it’s going to continue. I’m basically planning a summer camp here, and while I’m delegating some of the work out, most of the people haven’t done it before, and given the way our one meeting went, I have figured out that meetings aren’t going to be a very effective way of passing on the extant camp structure. That’d be less of a problem if most of the staff were experienced with this camp, or if we were planning it from the ground up. But since we’re not creating it from scratch, and …
Brother in Japan
Not my brother. I don’t have a brother. I mean a brother in Japan. Want a good laugh? Go have a look at Outpost Nine :: Editorials :: I am a Japanese School Teacher. It’s a series of editorials by a huge American black guy living in Japan and teaching little kids. And yes, I mention that he’s huge and black for a reason: it becomes immediately apparent in the way the kids treat him that this does impact on his story. I think some of the comedy in the stories he tells is derived from the image of little …
Festivals, Departments, And Academic Separatism
I walked about the campus this afternoon after my last work-hour, which was a shift in the English cafe. Of course, it’s festival time on campus so all the students were out eating roast pork and drinking booze; that means the English Cafe was almost empty, and I ended up just drinking a tea and watching the last half of the movie of the day, which was Resident Evil. Afterward, wandering among the stalls the different student clubs and department groups had put up, I noticed that the vast majority of them were selling the same thing. It seemed to …
