Feeling Slightly Less Secure

Walking around downtown today, picking up gifts for my upcoming visit to my family, I ran across a few scary shops. One of them had posters of all kinds of hunting rifles all over the front door and, when I glimpsed inside, there were more gun posters up on the wall. Are hunting rifles legal for Korean citizens? Well, even if they aren’t, they could go on ahead and pick up a new chainsaw or two. The chainsaw shop (I’m not kidding—there were five or six new chainsaws on display out on the street in front of the shop, and …

On Top Of Things

Well, there is nothing to makes you feel like getting as much work as possible done ahead of time as knowing that you’re leaving the country only a few days after the last test you’re giving. My gradesheets are all pretty much ready to hand in: homework ticks have all been made, attendance grades assigned, midterm marks all converted to out-of-30-marks. This means that during testing, all I need to do is plug in a mark out of 40 for the test grade, assign an in-class participation mark to be combined with the homework ticks into a single Homework/Participation grade, …

Stewed Chicken, Busy Woman

Well, it’s 6:45 and the 닭도리탕 is finished but Lime isn’t. She’s still at the hospital doing, well, some kind of doctorey stuff. It strikes me as funny that with an anglophone accent, “D’ak Dori Tang” sounds like the word “Doctorey Tang”. Well, while I’m killing time, I’ll point out this goodie: Found magazine has tons of amusing or interesting found objects for you to browse. Maybe I’ll subscribe to the actual paper magazine someday…

BoingBoingery

Look: Peter Jackson’s got an automated band in a box. Seriously! With banjos! What does it look like to be hit by a tornado? Now you can know. Enron sucks, but these social network analyzer tools can tell us in what way they got their suckage done. There’s lots of use in these things, I’m sure. Some of them scare me. Read: This article in which David Byrne considers the effect of recording on music. Some good points in there. Finally, this machine can replicate itself, they say. We SF geeks have been waiting for the big announcement for years, …

A Damned Fine Thing

It is usually with very little delay that I post about negative experiences, especially negative experiences involving bureaucracies. This is understandable because Bureacracies are the perfect hiding place for morons and passive-aggressives. Dealing with such people, when they are in a position where their “decisions” and “mistakes” can affect your life in really significant ways, is extremely frustrating. Dealing with bureaucracies in foreign countries, especially countries famed for sloppy procedure and last-minute rushing, is even more frustrating. But I decided a while back that I would also write about positive experiences, and despite the fact that my local bureaucracy—the department …

Happy Nappy

Some friends were researching possible names for a diaper club/service name, and they googled Happy Nappy. Now, if you know British English, you know that nappy means “diaper” in NorAmSpeak. Happy Nappy sounded innocent and cute enough, they thought, and I would tend to agree. A terrible rhyme but fine as a business name. Some fetishists seem to have thought so too. (Safe for work, but not for your mind.) Yes, somewhere in Kent, Southeast England, there is a nursery where you, an adult, can go and be dressed up like a baby, in a real diaper that you can …

The Angry Pedestrian

The following is angry. Cusses and such. Deal with it. If you cannot confront anger then you are a child. Go read Dr. Seuss or something. Because I’ve finally come to the conclusion that my hatred of the car is in full-bloom, pathological or not. This is a rant, and I may disagree with parts of it as soon as tomorrow. But for now, I mean it from my heart. I am an angry pedestrian, and today I figured out why. I bitch about Korean drivers, and yeah, a lot of people drive (even when stone-cold sober) as if they’re …

Things From Today

Here are some things from today: School Things My board usage isn’t that good. I mean that I often don’t organize how things will appear on the board very well, on the spot, and I don’t tend to plan it out much. This isn’t usually a problem, since I tend only to put vital information up and tend to erase a lot as we go along. I usually don’t have to put more than a couple of sentence structures and a list of words to use with them up at one time, if that. But when outlining an exam for …
