I’ve decided I simply must get all of the Hamiet Bluiett Baritone Nation albums. This page has some audio samples that finally convinced me that I need CDs in which the majority of the band is playing baritone saxes. (More samples of another Baritone Nation CD here.) This is some heavy stuff. I like it. I shall have to order these or something, since I doubt any music shop will have ’em just sitting on the shelf.

Is This The Song You Mean?
I think this is the song you wanted, Lime — Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Rain”. It’s popular here in Korea, so maybe that’s the one.
뒤섞여 있음의 기쁨: Yes, I’m Published in Korean
What does that mean? I’m not quite sure, but Lime said it was something like what I took to mean “Joyful Melding” or something like that. It’s the title that was given to the translation of the article I wrote in English about the Jeonju Sori Festival, which was published in this month’s 문화저저늘 (Culture Journal). Since I didn’t title it myself, the title can only be credited to the translator… Lime says the writing as rendered in Korean is absolutely beautiful, and of course I’m not sure whether that means my writing is good, or whether to credit only …
Eluvium and other worthwhile music
I’m going to post about one album I’ve really enjoyed lately, and then post a few words about other neat finds. The Big Pleasure: Eluvium’s Lambent Material Maybe you don’t like The Orb; I can understand that, but please don’t make the mistake of thinking all ambient music is like The Orb. For example, consider Brian Eno. Consider the soundscapes of John Cage. And please, definitely consider the music of Matthew Cooper, who records under the pseudonym Eluvium. My first impressions listening to it, right now, are that it is a kind of sweet, slow, Brian Enoesque thing, but with …
Traneimation
Here’s a funny little animation based on John Coltrane’s Giant Steps. I’m not crazy about it but it is kind of neat as a one-time diversion. (via a thread on Last.fm.)
That’s Where Beck Got Them….
Those funky string lines, that is. What’s that song by Beck with the wonderful string lines, from I think it was the Sea Change album? Oh, yeah, “Paper Tiger”. Well, anyway, the bulk of the good stuff was stolen from Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson. Maybe that’s credited somewhere. Actually, a little judicious Googling shows that Beck was pretty forward with the information, but still, it’s kind of a surprise and certainly, to me, a disappointment that so much of what I like about that particular song was simply a copy-and-paste job. Though, at least, it makes me think …

My Jeonju Sori Festival Writeup
I recently mentioned the Jeonju Sori Festival and how much I was enjoying it, and how I wanted to write about it, but had been asked to write a piece for translation and inclusion in a Korean magazine. I decided to simply write the magazine piece and post it here — for the time being, unless maybe I can submit it somewhere else — in one shot. Some of the people who attended the festival this year had some pretty negative things to say about it, and I can understand some of their disappointments — although the complaints tended to …
Poptrash
Over on the UKMIX forums I found a link to Poptrash, a site built to allow likeminded antifans to bash certain mainstream stars.
A Bit More
I was going to post a longish post fawning over the music I heard at the Jeonju Sori Festival, and my personal reactions, but I was asked today to write a two-page article about it (for translation and publication in a Korean magazine, I think a local thing). Because of this request I’m going to put off writing anything about it until tomorrow or the next day. Meanwhile I’m working on getting that website online for my friends, which should be up in a day or two. But I will say for now that the musicians who stay most strongly …
