The Most SF Jazz I Know

Steve Coleman’s music is worth knowing about. It’s jazz of a kind, but jazz that somehow comes out like science-fiction, all angular and, well, not “funky” so much as, I don’t know. It’s like bebop that started freebasing funk music or something, or maybe got a medical shot of funk in the butt to inoculate it against David Sanborn and Bob Rivers. It’s best when you start out, to forget the sometimes-incomprehensible (but to me enjoyable) manifestoism of the M-Base and all of that, and just check out the music, when you can get your hands on it. My favorite …

Listen To The Words

The fiendish Adam asks us this week: What are your 5 favorite lines from any song? Not the song itself, but specific lyrics that you dig, and find yourself repeating in your head. Oh, now, that’s just not fair. I listen most of the time to instrumental music, man! I mean, no singing, no words… Well, I’m gonna have to cheat a wee bit, choosing songs that were at some point important to me, however brief that moment was; so please, please bear with me. The complete lyrics of the Nat King Cole song It’s ONly a Paper Moon, which …

Tongueless in Jeonbuk

Well, I’m not tongueless but it feels like I have no tongue. This medicated mouthwash I’m using is making it feel as if my tongue is just not there, at least for nine of the first ten or so minutes after I use it. (The first minute, it feels as if it’s haloed in burning light, perhaps transfigured, so to speak.) Last night we played an okay show to a rather big crowd, big considering the venue. I should have brought my mic, but I thought we’d be playing “unplugged”, ie. with an acoustic guitar and minimal mics. Turned out …

Rare KLF, Weird Commentaries That Aren’t So Weird, and Thoughts on the Kleptocrats

I’ve downloaded something quite incredible, by that old group the KLF. I queued up the two long tracks and set in to listen. The first track seems to be a lot of prescient stuff foreshadowing a lot of later releases, but the second track is quite something, a spooky narration with a rich electronic background. The narration is a storyteller’s apocalyptic vision, but very much of a latter-day visionary’s trek into the strangeness of outside of the world we normally live in. Anyway, the limited edition LP I downloaded is something that doesn’t seem to be listed in most of …

Bad Music, Korean and Otherwise

Well, worth hearing anyway. It’s Korean: Unpleasantly (The Anthology) by The Pearl Sisters is the CD focused discussed in this page, which has a whole CD of tracks you can listen to. There’s also a page here on Korean Psychedelic and Acid Folk music… which is a subpage of a much bigger index of psychedelic music from around the world, but I’ll let you follow the thinks at your leisure and according to your curiosity. Links from a post on Metafilter by dhoyt. And speaking of bad music, I”m never ever going to play one of these.

On Pharoah Sanders

This morning, while listening to the album Tauhid, I was suddenly interested in Pharoah Sanders again, so I started looking him up online. I found a lot of junky pages but a few good things. Here’s one of them, a good little interview with Pharoah Sanders at JazzTimes. I mean, with an excerpt like this, how can you resist? “Can we talk?” I ask Pharoah Sanders. “OK, long as we don’t get into the John Coltrane thing,” laughs Master P. “I don’t know what I can say, that’s all over with.” It’s gotta be tough moving out from the shadow …

Morning Music

So I’m listening to the soundtrack from Black Cat White Cat, a film by Emir Kusturica, a wonderful director. I really need to find his DVDs and buy them. Or something. Anyway, the lyrics to this one song are hilarious… or is it the delivery? I love the way the singer apologizes for the quality of his English, and then starts proclaiming, “All we need is a long wehicule, a long wehicule, a long wehicule, to go!” He means vehicle, but you know, accents and all. It’s hilarious and wonderful. Druggie gangsters, gypsy love (with a stunning gypsy girl of …
