The Science of Aliens, by Clifford Pickover

I’m in the habit of posting reviews for all the books I read, having done it all throughout 2005, so I’m posting this one too, which I posted over at Allconsuming.net, even though it goes against the principle of saying nothing at all if you have nothing to say. But if it saves time for someone for whom this book is not really worthwhile, it’ll be worth. Not a diss on Pickover, by the way: as you can see from his site, the guy’s published a lot, and I’m sure he’s made a tidy profit doing so. But his prose …

Bruce Sterling’s Visionary in Residence

So finally, after weeks of being busy with other things, I’ve finished reading Bruce Sterling’s most recent collection of short fiction, titled Visionary in Residence (after the position he served at a Design College during the year when he wrote some of the more recent of these stories, not, as one of his critics at Amazon implies, after his sense of his own genius). If you read the reviews at Amazon, you see that they’re kind of mixed. As for my opinion, I’ll say this: I have been busy, but I also put the book down a couple of times …

The Third Chimpanzee, by Jared Diamond, & The Ostensibly Weak Identity of Teenagers

I just finished this book this evening. Fascinating stuff… so much so that I put off starting grading just so I could finally actually finish it. Granted, there wasn’t a lot in the book that I didn’t sort of know, or suspect, and there are sections that are very clearly his later (and equally fascinating, though somewhat more flawed at the beginning and end) book Guns, Germs, and Steel in embryonic form, but still, it was an excellent read. I really quite enjoyed it. One of the funny side effects of reading this book of Diamond’s is that I’m always …

Dowland’s Death?

How the heck did John Dowland actually die? Does anyone out there in Internet-land know? I can’t find a snip of data on the web — and I spent an hour googling around for the info. The best I can find is the Dowland expert Diana Poulton suggesting he took ill in January 1626 and probably didn’t die until closer to the date of his burial in February 1626. The fact I am writing something (very vaguely) about Dowland should not surprise anyone looking in the sidebar. Though I hadn’t recalled Philip K. Dick being a fan, it makes sense, …

Syriana

I just watched Syriana, and found, well, entertaining enough. There were lots of plot threads running at once, and while they all kind of came together, I could see where they were headed, mostly, about halfway in. Still, some of the ideas bandied about in the movie were interesting, if a bit disturbing. How do people deal with crippling loss? How do people deal with hopelessness? How do people deal with their own guilt? And what might the Middle East look like in a century? All interesting questions. Unfortunately, the answers to most of them, as offered in Syriana, were …

혈의 누

혈의 누 (Blood Rain), directed byKim Dae-sung, was a film that I once told Lime I wanted to watch, and she said she’d already seen it and didn’t wish to re-view it. At the time, she told me it was about a “serial killer” or “a murder mystery” (I can’t remember how she put it) “in the Joseon Dynasty”. Which, to me, sounded fascinating, but I bided my time, until today. Well, I watched it tonight, and have to admit, I indeed did find it quite fascinating. It reminded me of nothing more than the film version of The Name of …

Anomie Pop

I have the first of my two or three class meetings for British Popular Culture planned out: a powerpoint giving a basic “crash course” in British popular culture, followed by an episode (probably episode 1, or else the Pub Quiz episode) of The Office, with some discussion interspersed. For the second lecture, I’m thinking we could discuss sport culture, and I have a great episode of the TV program Life on Mars which deals with soccer, hooliganism, and all kinds of 70s pop culture. The third (maybe, probably) meeting, I’m thinking we could watch some of Brassed Off, and I …
