Good Night and Good Luck

I watched the film Good Night and Good Luck the other night, and, well, it’s very obvious why a film about that ridiculous monster McCarthy had to be made now. This came to my mind as I read a post over at LocoMote which, honestly, I misread the first time I saw it. But I have noticed that people are still being polite to the legions of morons who think the Iraq Invasion was a sane, reasonable action. Why are they being polite? Why are people still being apologetic for their honesty? Why is this even a concern? There have …

Horrid Little Amusements

Thank heaven for webpages containing lines like this: He is just a violent monster, a dead meat, a shame to his family and the country of South Korea. I wonder why this person “koreanvictim” hates this Mr. Bak so much. Anyway, check out the page while you can. It’s painful and borders on horrifying, but if you don’t wince too hard, and concentrate on the text itself, it’s like black comedy, a dreadfully funny hate-on, and I would even dare to suggest it might be a fictional work, the whole thing. Bloggers of Seoul: Untie and Take Over.

Yes, Untie. Or something. I have a song in my head, and I hope you know it’s the Smiths. Three and a half hours of editing and we’re now done one of the two articles for the University Magazine. I didn’t think it would take this long to do the second read-through and edit the conclusion, and so I said a smoky upper room in a cafe would be okay, but now, I smell like smoke and I feel exhausted. I think I’m going to go wander, pick up a few nice foreign foodstuffs, and perhaps putter about at WhatTheBook. …

Stories That Are On Their Way Out The Door

I’ve mentioned this a few times, and I thought I might just go ahead and post a couple of lists. They’re as much to help me remember what I’m planning on sending out, and to help pressure me into finishing the redrafts of the ones needing more work, as they are to pique your interest. But for those who’d sampled stories and wondered why became of them, you may discover something of interest here. Without further ado, the lists: READY TO GO NOW: VERSE: ‘Ishk Gaslight Kjellgaard’s Notes (previously “Naturalism Experiment #2”) SHORT FICTION The Plea From Factory Unit 5 …

I would like some milk…

I can’t believe that I’ve had this Aphex Twin CD (Richard D. James Album, I think it’s called) for over four years — my friend Jack gave me a copy only a couple of days before I left Canada — and in all this time, during many listenings, I never made out exactly where Mr. Aphex was saying he would like some milk from. It’s quite perverse, and it’s only NOW that I understand why Jack commented about the album something along the lines that the artist was a rather twisted fellow. I just can’t believe I never noticed he …

Primer (2004)

Have you seen Primer? I watched it just before I moved, and I have to say, my initially bad feeling washed away as I suddenly got the movie, understood what it was about, and followed it happily to its conclusion. The thing is, it’s SF. It’s also deadly quiet, deadly calm, slow, and very geeky. Spooky and geeky. It’s spooky because it seems to me it’s realistic in a way that isn’t common in SF. It brings to mind the comments from Ritu’s LJ which I bookmarked on my other computer, where she linked to this essay by Pam Noles …

Back Online

As some of you might have imagined, I have finally attained net access at home. It’s ever so slightly embarrassing how relieving this actually is… I could feel it, palpably feel my disconnection from the net, from those whom I know online, and it was a little disconcerting. My schedule is such that it’s a little hard to call Canada, though I think tomorrow I shall try give my mother a shout. But tonight, I did a little catching up, and as anyone paying attention to the other posts from tonight can see, it was Ritu’s LJ I decided to …
