My First Big Round

I’m on the verge of a big round of submissions to SF magazines — really, my first, and something that I put off for far, far too long. Even though I’m busy, it’s not as much work as one might think, since I’ve had a bunch of stuff ready to send out for a long time, and a bunch of other stuff that’s only a once-over away from being ready, and still more that needs a good solid working-over, but not a complete rewrite. So here I am, with my laptop and OpenOffice, and I’m ready to get all these …

A moment only

My to-do list remains long, but I thought I’d spend a minute updating here. The morning was off from class, because there was a mass, and I have never quite seen a mass like this before: there was a choir, but at the end, some apparently very-famous Korean Catholic pop star came and sang three songs. I think the sound system was a little overloaded, as it gave out a little way into the third song, a couple of times no less, but she sang her little heart out (little, because she was strikingly short and small of build) and …

More Ads?

I don’t know why, but I’ve been getting more phone spam since I moved to Bucheon… even though I don’t recall giving my number to anyone new. It’s strange! You know, phone spam… when a call comes but it’s just a machine calling you, no real person on the other end, and the machine is there simply to get you to buy something. I really wish I knew why I am getting more of it now.

The Runabout

Here I am again on runabout, though it’s a mild one. I had class this morning, and unlike my previous classes, this one didn’t seem to scare the students very much. They seemed to leave the room with a good, happy feeling. I’m a little worried that I came on too strong in my other classes by letting students see my course outline, which in some cases had too much detail. It’s a symptom of nerves that one overprepares, as everyone knows… everyone except students, who just think, “Oh my God, this guy is asking SO much of us!” Anyway, …

Sax Tax

I just quickly checked my email on the local free network, and thought I’d post this before I go see Lime for a bit, before my next class starts up. When I arrived in Incheon this afternoon, I was (of course) stopped by the Customs Officers, but they didn’t just once-over my bag and wave me through. No, no, they asked me to follow them to a side room, and a long, confusing discussion that I couldn’t really follow commenced. At the end of it, I learned that, on that strange and perplexing evening when I first arrived in Korea, …

No Wm. Gibson?

I was in the Japanese bookshop the other day, looking for a couple of books for Lime’s friend who majored in Japanese lit. That was a pretty odd experience… the girls who helped me spoke very little English, and I ended up saying, “New? Woman or man? Award? Okay!” and getting two books that way. While I was there, I checked out their extremely decent little SF-section, when I noted that there was no William Gibson in the SF section. I found myself surprised, but only for a moment. I guess a lot of the allure of his Nipponese sf-fantasies …

Wish Me, Well, Not Good Luck, But Maybe a Broken Leg or Something

I thought I would miss the deadline for the Canadian Speculative Fiction Anthology Tesseracts10, but it turns out they accept electronic submissions and that the deadline is today, so I spent the morning preparing my electronic submissions in PDF format. Now, if you follow the link, you’ll see that the deadline is March 1st… 2005. Argh. Anyway, it was a good learning experience for me: I figured out how to export PDFs with all the proper formatting in Open Office, and I chose some stories and poems that I think are publishable. I’ve emailed someone at Edge, the publisher of …
