Trippin’

Trippin’. I did that this weekend, in a few ways, though I don’t suppose I want to talk about all of them. (No, not tripped out, don’t worry, Mom.) The main sense was, well, going on a trip… again. This time, I went to Seoul. The first thing I did was to pay a visit to my new favorite travel agent, and pay him to get me a visa to reside in India for two months. I’m supposed to get that posted back to me with my tickets early next week. After that, I bought a second-hand flute to keep …

The Five Ages of Man

This week’s Friday Five question comes courtesy of Nanette: I work in the music business. Glamorous as this may sound, we are actually just two women in a home office in South Austin. Hipness, youth and cool factor are a common topic of conversation between me and my boss, I’m 35 and she’s 39. We often reminisce about our cool groovy old days when we actually went out to see the kind of bands we work with and go to the clubs we talk to everyday and it dawns on us that we are sooo way out of the cool …

on Lee Kyung Hae

I just ran across a story online about a Korean farmer who killed himself in Cancun during the protests, a kind of public martyrdom in protest. I didn’t heard about it it at the time, because I was so busy moving in to Jeonju and adjusting, but now that I’m reading it, I am shocked. I didn’t even know that a group of Korean farmers had gone over to Cancun for the protests, much less one of them committing a protest suicide! I can admire the strength of his will to protest, and what he gave up for his cause, …

Boredom Flirtation

This article in The Onion hits the nail on the head when it comes to boredom flirtation: Sorta-Attractive Girl Half-Heartedly Hit On. It’s a dumb thing to do, but I remember having done it once or twice in the past. And it’s funny, when you put it this way… makes you realize that doing that is such a waste of time. Better to go off and find someone really worth the bother… :)

Tuin Jang Jjigae

I made the most beautiful fermented soybean soup last night. It doesn’t traditionally have mushrooms in it, but I added that, along with potatoes, peppers, onions, tofu, and garlic. And I found the secret to making it perfectly: I put way too much water in with the soybean paste, and then I boiled it for a long time until the soup was thick brown. Had it for breakfast. It was sooooooo good. Gorgeous! But now I’m hungry again.

Office Conversation

Nick’s telling us about a vodka drinking contest. 1 guy died, 3 more in intensive care. 1.5 L of vodka in 40 minutes is what killed the winner of the contest. Nick is wondering how his students will react to an article about this, so he asks our Korean co-worker about it: Nick: “Hey Cheol Seong, do Korean students have drinking contests often?” Cheol Seong: “Well, there’s no prize but their whole life is a kind of drinking contest.” Hahaha.

The best travel agent in Korea.

I’m willing to bet that Mr. Jang-Yong Choi is the best travel agent in Korea. He works at Time Machine Travel up in Seoul. Here’s the company’s webpage. (It’s also available in Korean.) Where other agents only checked the cheapest classes, he went one class up, checked on things, and managed to get me tickets to India via Bangkok, and back, with a short stopover in Bangkok, all for only a little over a million won! (About a thousand dollars, cheaper than anything I have been offered yet.) And on top of that, he even is looking up what I …
