Lately has been a complicated time for me. One of the things I have learned is that life is absolutely complicated, no matter how much we simplify it. It is complicated not just because of the other people in life, which is what is usually suggested by people. But life is also complicated because of what we are.

My Old Man And The Web
Well, I went ahead and, in an act less of narcicissm than curiosity and a desire to tabulate all the links containing any info about me online, I googled myself. Come on, like you’ve never done it? I found the stuff I already know about, plus some odd hits containing references to my dad. He had been working in quality assurance and also some R&D, I think, in the food treatment industry. Here’s a link where he is mentioned in connection to pea micronization, hemp sterilization, and on standards in Canadian grain regulations. Nice bit of oddness, that. :)
Romanticism and Nations
Ever since about a month ago, I’ve had a kind of niggling little problem eating away at my thinking. At that time, I was discussion nationalism and the rule of law with my famous Northstar class. I asked the class about what they thought of the Geneva Conventions and the justifiability of war… basically asking if the idea of a “just war” philosophy or tradition is acceptable, since the validity of that idea is something the code outlined in the Geneva Conventions to some degree implies. Big Move
Well, here’s the big news, for those of you who didn’t see a mass email from me: I have taken a department job over at Jeonju University. It begins at the end of August, so I will be on staff at Wonkwang until the mid-August holidays, and then I will begin over at Jeonju University at the end of August. For now, I’m just getting my head around the idea of the holidays I’ll be enjoying, and trying to make sure the paperwork gets done properly and quickly. Dreams
I’ve been sleeping longer hours these days, because of exhaustion. I was, for a time, extensively planning three classes and trying to get full handouts ready for a couple of those classes every day. (Things have chilled out considerably now that I’ve realized at least one class explicitly doesn’t want handouts.) There was actually a day where I was so damned tired that I started getting chest pains and slept 12 hours at night… and felt much better the next day, thank goodness. But anyway, I’ve been having some very very weird dreams. Two that I recall are worth writing …
A Day At The Beach, Update
It seems that the little dog SaeNal died a little while after that day we spent on the beach. I found this out after making a stupid unwitting joke to Chong-Sook about wanting to make dog soup with her (SaeNal was a she). I guess she was in a new home, because Chong-Sook had to give her away, and she died falling off a table, the poor thing. I wasn’t close to the dog, so as much as a I feel bad for Chong-Sook, who really loved SaeNal, for me it’s more an experience of strangeness. I always find it weird …
Last Night…
Yesterday was a very frustrating day. Our all-day practice turned out to be a lot of waiting and waiting, followed by only a few hours of real work. (Today, we can hope, will be different.) We played at the Led Zeppelin club’s 1-year anniversary, and then took off for other pastures. We ended up at a popular foreigner hangout in Jeonju, which is funny because the popular foreigner hangout there seems to me different than the on in Iksan. In my town it seems a place for kid stuff, but in Jeonju I like at least some of the crowd. …
