2006 in Review, and Plans for 2007

Happy New Year! Well, it seems de rigeur to post a retrospective of the year, so this post is going to be a little personal. Feel free to skip over it if you’re not that interested. In 2006, I managed to do a lot of things: My father passed away. I miss him, and I wish I could call him… and I wish I’d called him more often. Lime and I got through a major hurdle, which was managing a relationship where one member is working 120-hour weeks. She’s been so busy, but now that’s over, and she’ll have perhaps …

Network Madness?

On my various Linux boxes, Gmail has gone all coy — meaning, I could access it but not send or save drafts — and I was poking around for a while looking for a fix. It looks like another URL thing. I banged my head against this for a while, and then found something in one of the Google forums somewhere that seemed to fix it: https://mail.google.com/mail/s/ Except that now I can’t even post to my blog without trying this https:// trick, and I can’t submit info to forums. In fact, uploading any kind of information at all seems to …

Three Cheers For Lime!

Well, those of you who know, know that Lime’s been hoping to get into a certain branch of medicine for the rest of her residency. There’s good news: she got the call today, and, well, she probably wouldn’t want me to say anything too explicit, but… if SARS broke out in Korea, or bird flu, or some other newfangled scary disease, she’d be among the people dealing with it. Think Outbreak. Except she’s much cuter than Dustin Hoffman ever was.

“The Wager”

I’m on a roll, I guess. After revising and expanding and basically rewriting most of Ogallala, I realized it was too long to send to the market I was hoping to send it to, and so I decided to rework another story I’d been saving up for criticism. Be warned, spoilers, so if you’re planning on critting it, read no farther.

Santa and Pascal’s Wager

Melissa Lipscomb’s latest domestic disturbance is up. It’s about all the Christmas lies that parents tell, and an interesting one. The following passage made me laugh out loud: A few days ago Adam left the house and used his cell phone to call Alec in the guise of Santa with a timely reminder that calling people “idiot” was liable to provoke the direst consequences. It’s a bit soon to tell, but I can report that Alec hasn’t used the word again since then. I personally don’t remember ever believing in Santa, though I guess a forecast of my philosophical future …

It’s Snowing, It’s Snowing!

It was the first big dump of snow this winter, today, at least in Bucheon. I didn’t see much snow in Seoul, though. Lime wrote some kind of exam. Apparently every intern in half of Seoul, Incheon, Bucheon, etc. was in the same place, writing the same test. We met for coffee and… Then we had some pho after. It comes with hot Jasmine tea. There’s a good little pho place in Hongik, where we sometimes go. I hope she won’t mind me posting this pic, as it’s blurry. But she might. Then we wandered around, and finally had dinner …

iMac G3, Strawberry Flavour

Well, now on the desk in my office there are two computers running: in Intel Jooyontech PC running Ubuntu Linux, and a Strawberry iMac G3 — you know, the blobject kind of thing like the one pictured on the right. The former I bought several years ago from a Korea-blogger named Shawn, not too long before his unfortunate suicide in China. The iMac, the more recent addition to my roomful of PCs, was given to me by another professor down the hall named Nico. I plugged in my wireless laptop and keyboard to see whether it’d work for me, and …
