I have precisely three classes left this semester, each one hour long. Well, actually, fifty minutes, but you get the idea. This evening, a final-exam postmortem with my English Through Drama class, and a final meeting with my evening Intermediate Composition class, where the students will write me a letter, at my request, about what they’ve learned in the last 15 weeks. Tomorrow morning, I’ll have another one-hour meeting with my other Composition students and they’ll do the same thing. From then on, it’s all just about assigning final grades, marking one written final exam, and wading my way through …

Flickring
I’ve added loads of photos to my Flickr account–linked in the sidebar–in the last few days. Today, I added shots from today, an outing with Lime around Bucheon. Users on my contacts list can see more pics, including pics of Lime, who’s forbidden public posting of any pictures of her, for reasons I’ve discussed before on this blog. Anyway, lots of new pics to see. I’m making this pro account worth the price.
Slouching Towards Christmas
Feeling sick. Not doing much of anything right now. Vegging. Surfing. Gonna watch a movie. I’m hoping to kick this cold by next week. I have a somewhat busy week ahead, as the last real week of classes for the semester. Play performance Monday. Tuesday, a lecture and review for an exam. Wednesday and Thursday, I’m having the writing students do an unusual assignment — writing me letters about my class. Thursday, a lecture on “The Canadian Identity”. Then that’s it. A final exam on the following Tuesday, and piles of essays to read but a lot of time to …
Such Denial, But Also Some Cool Awareness, and a Brilliant Film Idea
So one of my students raised, in a smaller-group discussion in class, the idea that Dr. Hwang Woo-Seok was defrauded by Americans who stole his work–scientific espionage!–and then sent fake results under his name to Nature.
Late Night Laundry, Mr. Wolfram, and My Experience of Mobile Automata
Last night I was up late doing some laundry — a lot of my own, plus some of Lime’s, which needed to get done last night so that she could bring it back to the hospital early today. The place where she’s working doesn’t even provide a single washing machine for those members of staff working 80-120 hour weeks, if you can imagine that… their one night off is when they get to go somewhere else to do their laundry. Anyway, she was dead asleep but I was waiting for the dryer cycle to finish drying the load, so I …
Translated From the Korean
Text messages between Lime and myself today: Lime: Honey, honey! It’s snowing! Gord: Huh? That’s not snow! That’s just white rain. It doesn’t count as snow if it melts when it hits the ground. At least, not if it melts completely. But it is getting chilly outside. By my definition, it doesn’t snow much in Korea, mind you.
Head Above L’Eau
Just sticking my head above water to say I’m busy. I have sent out six stories today, to seven different markets (one was a simultaneous submission), and tomorrow I have a lecture to attend in the afternoon, and then some kind of Department variety show that I need to act as one of the judges for in the early evening. (The top three prizes are the equivalent of $100, $75, and, I think, $50 US.) The talent show almost got canceled because too few students signed up, but I managed to force some of the students in my English Through …
Submissions Out, So Back to the Grind
It’s pathetic to admit it, but the real reason I finally got off my butt and sent subsmissions out was because we had a challenge set up among my classmates from my Clarion West class, that we would send at least six stories out within the first three months after the end of the workshop. I barely made the deadline, but actually, it’s a good thing I held off. I caught a couple of things, such as the fact that in the beginning of “Soul Competency”, my Second Coming With a Twist story, the guy teaching English to The Lord …
AllConsuming Down?
Anyone else out there having this problem? I searched the Web for complaints but couldn’t find any. When I try to load AllConsuming.net nothing comes up… which has significantly slowed the loading speed of my own site, since I had a couple of feeds from my consumption lists on display on my pages. Has anyone else noticed this, either on my own site, or in terms of the original AllConsuming site? If it goes on much longer, I’ll have to cut the AllConsuming feed and if it’s not fixed in a few days I may migrate out. (I was looking …
