Now Using Flickr

I’m now using Flickr to host my photos, as you can see from the new photo-block and link in the sidebar. I have uploaded a bunch, and with my pro account, I’ll be able to upload a bunch more. All I need to do is get around to doing it. I have 2 gigs of bandwith allowed me per month, so I think most of my decent photos from the last few years should be uploaded by the time next semester starts. Note that there will be some pics — shots of my girlfriend, and others — that will be …

the juggling underworld

The unpleasantness of going to the immigration office today, dealing with a staff that cannot speak English — I think it’s silly to demand that in coffeeshops and restaurants but good grief, a basically monolingual staff in an immigration office? — and of course the long wait, sitting beside people who seem to think nothing of playing video games on their phones at full blast, regardless of whether the repeated bleeping noise might, you know, annoy others or not. Along with discovering that my phone, miraculously fixed, is probably unmiraculously note quite fixed at all (it shuts itself off, still, …

Guess What Shuffle Demons Song is in my Head?

Not only because Kevin’s link to thi post by C. Buddha, either? Today, I met Lime in Hong Ik and we had dinner — Vietnamese — and a coffee. She’s very much enjoying the Korean translation of the Jared Diamond book I got for her, and she returned the giftiness with some nice Korean CDs from Purple Records. After that, we went our separate ways, she to the hospital and I to Bucheon. I had considered taking the slow train to Bucheon, and just sitting and reading, but thought, oh, if I catch the Rapid train to Dongincheon, which stops …

The Resurrection of the Phone

My phone died a nasty little death a few days ago. At first, it just started dropping calls. Then it started turning itself off at random times. Finally, it wouldn’t turn on at all. This was a little distressing. Suddenly I was out of touch with Lime, who works on the other side of town. I was out of touch with the office, which is bad because there’s a tendency for news to reach me at the last minute. I was out of touch with anyone who didn’t send me an email. And, then again, in some ways, distressing wasn’t …

AFM

AFM stands for A F___ing Meltdown. Both of my computer systems went bonkers today, which is strange, and is one of those little things that happens when you use a totally-free OS, I suppose. Ubuntu went mad on my laptop, though in that case, simply running the LiveCD fixed it, which sometimes happens in good old 5.10. But in version 6.10, something weirder’s going on. My DVD-ROM drive won’t even open once the system has started up, and I also had to put in some little file blocking part of the startup system, as outlined here. (Though, you might note, …

Curse the Cursive

Charles’ post on the slow death of cursive script brought back my own memories of remedial handwriting exercises. My teacher, Mrs. Bremner, discovered when I was in, oh, sixth grade that I was printing everything. So, since I was also completing all assignments in half the time it took anyone else in my class, she started assigning my handwriting practice. I couldn’t understand why print wasn’t good enough, and so I did the exercises with the same dedication with which one completes punishments consisting of the repeated writing of lines. If s looks like this, or like that, what does …

The Other Projects in My Folders…

My last post was about stories being tracked in my sidebar. But I have folders full of other stuff. Those other projects in my drafts box, I thought I’d mention just to keep myself honest, and to amuse those curious about what kinds of things I’m writing about. 4. Refugees (short story): A spooky response to the Fermi Paradox that starts with a sudden reception of a signal from a civilization about 1000 light years away, and gets compounded by the sudden, highly-visible, and (relatively) slow front of a wave of interstellar refugees through close visible space. 5. AI Ghost …

Families

Family. It boggles the mind. So this is my baby sister, who is 30 (she is 30 this year, I think, or is it 29?), and her little boy, Kinlay. The name’s a bit unusual, no? It was my father’s middle name, in the Scottish tradition where children take their mothers’ maiden names as their middle names. Helps keep track of who’s related to whom, I suppose. My Dad only missed meeting the little fella by months, by less than a year. The fleetingness of life is a damned rip-off sometimes, isn’t it? Apparently Kinlay’s quiet, calm, smiley, though he’s …
