Ouch. really?

I’m revising my Clarion story The Country of the Young and the feedback from classmates is great. Not just the line-edits, which I’m halfway through, but also the general comments. I ran across a comment in one of the manuscripts, beside the following text: People always had done so, but at first it had only been a race thing: a Korean girl with any foreign man made people look a little. Beside that sentence, someone wrote, “Ouch. Really?” I think it may have been Tina C, but I’m not sure. (Tina, was it you? Would anyone remember, even?) Well, there’s …

Whee!!!1!

Yes, I finally went to the library today and got myself access to the OED online, and to Nature online, and all kinds of other resources online. It’s a lovely thing to be able to trawl through ten years of the finest of science publication, and wander through the best English dictionary on the planet, all for free. A lovely thing. And other cool news: I was told I can enter Seoul University’s open stacks with only an ID card. I don’t need to be studying or working there, I just need to bring some ID. I wonder if interlibrary …

Windows Has Given Itself a Nasty Death-Infection of Some Kind, AKA the hal.dll bug…

Well, my desktop PC was working a week ago, though the connection to the Net was dead. (Someone apparently cut the LAN cable during the renovations in the building where my office is located.) But last week I went in to print some files, and discovered that, all of a sudden, the damned thing was refusing to boot up. Some kind of hal.dll file in the System32 folder is ganked, and I haven’t been able to make it work again. The recovery CD and boot CD aren’t working. I’m getting close to the point where I’ll have to sigh and …

Current Positional Adjustments

New semester adjustments: There’s some new kind of antivirus apps on the uni PCs. They do such lovely things as prevent you installing the apps you need and nobody else needs, like apps that play both sound and subtitled for ripped DVDs that have not been released in Asia. There’s a workaround, sort of. But I hope it stays worked around long term. There’s some kind of SQL thing running on all the PCs too, and you can’t log out of it without a password of some kind. Ack! I’m trying to slow down my speech again. Having been out …

Mad Sh*tters and Donut Shoe Porno Freaks

c(h)ristine (hypothetically) has a “mad shitter” at her workplace, apparently. And yes, it is sad that there is a category of weird people who defecate in workplaces. Well, I can’t say I’ve ever had a comparable experience to that one, but once, way back around the turn of the century (haha, I can say that now!), I was working at a now-defunct company that made computer-usage tutorials for the blind. I lived pretty far from work; it ended up being something like 20 minutes by bus, then 45 minutes by subway, or else 20 minutes by train and then 25 …

I was gonna do some writing…

But my hard drive filled up. It filled up to the point my word processor was crashing, but of course I didn’t know that was what happened, so I logged out, rebooted, and then, after the reboot, it wouldn’t let me log in. The hard drive was so damned full that I couldn’t even log in, there was no room for the logs to run and log my logging in. And I don’t know the command line in Linux quite well enough to deal with that unaided. Happily, I had Lime’s old laptop here, and I connected to the net …

“The Utmost Confidentiality”

Interesting how the Nigerian email scam has become a template for other scams: Greetings from Dubai, This letter must come to you as a big surprise, but I believe it is only a day that people meet and become great friends and business partners. I am Mr. Majid Al-Hussein, currently Chief Security Officer with a reputable security and finance company here in U. A. E. I write you this proposal in good faith, believing that I can trust you with the information I am about to reveal to you. I have an urgent and very confidential business proposition for you. …

Back, back, back

I’m back. The wedding was lovely, low-key but a lot of drinking in the afterward bit, with which I couldn’t realy keep up. But happily I turned that sow’s ear into a cheap silken purse, by taking many pictures that shall (dis)grace Flickr soon. It was very good to meet my old friend Charlie and my slightly-less-old friend Claire. Melbourne the next day was okay, but I was a bit constrained in terms of time and foolishly missed the Picasso exhibition — damn fool me, I didn’t go straight there when I got downtown, but hunted around for cheap winter …
