In Case You Missed It

Hey! In case you missed the nifty Google logo for today, it’s World Water Day! Yes, a reminder of the importance of water conservation and sustainable usage, etc. etc. I remember recently mentioning having read about the possibility of wars over water in the future, somewhere online, and some flapjack American Bushita laughing at me. Think it’s crazy? Something so nuts it sounds like it’s out of a Frank Herbert novel? Think again. And again. In Africa and the Middle East (you know, the Middle East), the risk of water wars is rising. Respected author Vandana Shiva has written about …

Underground Fires

I didn’t even know such things were possible, let alone that they existed. But Centralia, Pennsylvania is a good example of a long-term underground mine fire. The pictures on this page are spooky enough, but you can also follow the links at the bottom of the page to find out more about the history of this fire. Quite the thing I was looking for to use in a short story I’m working on.

Did You Feel That?

At just before 11:00am this morning, my whole apartment moved around a little bit. I’ve never felt anything like it, and it only lasted a few seconds, but I realized it wasn’t just in my head because my clothes, hanging in my closet, were still swaying to and fro when the movement stopped. The first thing I thought was that it might have been an earthquake. The only thing about an earthquake I can find in South Korea is on About Joel, from almost a year ago. What’s even weirder, I know I was here last year, during that bigger …

Lime on White Day

I wrote something about Lime, and I thought I had posted it here on White Day, but it ended up in a separate part of my blog, where nobody can see it. Whoops. So she didn’t see it on the day intended. You know, White Day, a kind of couples-day like Valentine’s Day in Korea. Ooops, bad me. I also confused her work schedule somehow, thinking she was going to be working in ER all night when she was actually off at 11pm. I’m bad. Bad man. Ug ug. But anyway, I did write about Lime, and here it is. …

Wooj Getting Caught

Finally digging into a few blogs I’ve left hanging on my Bloglines subscriptions, I find with great delight that Wooj, the blogger at Blog of the Pythi Master, has a series going on “Getting Caught”. They tell the hilarious story of his youthful experiences with pornography. Read Blog of the Pythi Master: Getting caught — Episode 1 here, and follow up with Episode 2. If that doesn’t make you laugh, I don’t know what will. I just hope he doesn’t turn into some kind of pornographic Darth Vader in Episode 3.

Oh-oh…

Strange how a tiny sound can bring back a whole moment, a whole person to mind, isn’t it? I don’t know why I am listening to Tori Amos right now—yes, I’ll admit I am, but clarify that I’m not at all depressed. Perhaps it was my lengthy writing about apostasy in the previous post, but something put me in the mood. The album is Under The Pink and the moment and person who came to mind was an old classmate and friend, Chiraz.

on Postmodernism

I don’t have much to post here, today, but there’s an interesting discussion going on over on the blog I co-run with Marvin, The New Sophists’ Almanac. Currently the discussion seems focused on postmodernism, what it’s really all about, how it relates to science (ie. what’s wrong with it), and I’ve posted what I think can be done to fix the mess. The posts appear in reverse order of appearance, so you may wish to go to the first one in the series and work your way to the newest by clicking on the post title to the right of …
