Our Mythic Bastionland, Session 1

This entry is part 2 of 25 in the series Our Mythic Bastionland

So, we played our first session of Mythic Bastionland. I think I’ll be blogging a log of events, and I’m going to skip anytying that would be spoilers for stuff the players don’t know about, for now at least. Maybe once the series is wrapped up, I’ll post a separate post with accumulated background spoilers and comments.   The epic begins quietly, deep in the Merragon forest (on the western edge of the map I shared last time), sometime in the afternoon. Three knights appear, riding their steeds. The first is Sir Yorick Childermass, the least knightly-looking of the lot in …

Not Yet Gods Translation, NOT Out Today!

Edit (16 January 2026): Er, yeah, no, it wasn’t actually out. It’s coming out next year. Some miscommunication there, and I forgot that I’d posted this. Sorry! I’m happy to announce that we have a new translation out today (11 November)! It’s a book by the South Korean SF author Djuna titled Not Yet Gods, which was translated by Jihyun Park and myself, and published by Kaya Press.  It was a big project and we want to express our thanks for indispensable editorial help from Sunyoung Park, Ly Lan Dill, and Michael Ahn.  Jihyun and I been translating together for …

September/October 2025 Reading

This entry is part 6 of 8 in the series Books Read 2025

Here’s what I read in September and October of this year! I didn’t really read any RPG-related stuff in the past couple of months, at least not cover-to-cover, so this will be the only readings post for these months.

Meanwhile, in the Woodshed…

So, for a while there I had a lot going on and wasn’t making it to the practice room, but the place where my son takes piano lessons offered a discount: ₩50,000 a month for family members to use the practice room if there’s a student enrolled with lessons at the music center. That’s way more affordable than the practice rooms used to be, and it takes a lot of the pressure to practice every day (which I felt when access was more expensive), so we jumped at it as soon as I felt up to it, which as it …

July/August 2025 Reading, Part 2: RPG Books

This entry is part 5 of 8 in the series Books Read 2025

I recently posted about the fiction and nonfiction I red in July/August here. That’s only half the story, though: I also tore through a bunch of RPG books this past couple of months—mostly at the end of June and going into August—and that’s what I’m going to discuss in this post.  (I’ve split this the two posts up because I know some people are more interested in reading about RPG books, and some aren’t at all.)

July/August 2025 Reading, Part 1: Fiction & Nonfiction

This entry is part 4 of 8 in the series Books Read 2025

Here’s what I read in July and August of 2025. Finally, I had the chance to finish up some books I’ve been reading for ages, along with reading some new things I just recently discovered. One note: I’ve separated RPG books from everything else, since some people are not interested in that stuff.

The Magus by Momatoes: A Playthrough

Not long ago I received my copy of Momatoes’ game The Magus (“Oracular” edition), which I backed on Kickstarter. It’s a gorgeous print edition put out by Nessun Dove (though it’s also available via itch.io) and seriously, I have very few gaming books I think are more beautiful. Hell, I think I have very few books of any kind that are. It also came with an oracle deck and that, too, is just gorgeous as well as full of tons of interesting, compelling prompts.  The thing is, it’s a solo game, and I have a terrible track record with solo …

Coming Soon: Mythic Bastionland!

This entry is part 1 of 25 in the series Our Mythic Bastionland

My turn to run a game has come up with my Sunday night group, and out of the options I offered everyone to choose from, the big winner was Mythic Bastionland. I’d fortunately just read the whole thing, and also had recently gotten a chance to play a one-shot of the game with my other group, GMed by the inimitable Jeremy Tolbert. After that, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the game and that I could do it justice.  I really admire a few things about the design. For one, it has the same kind of …
