The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch
Ah, yes, I dare put Philip K. Dick into the “lit” department, which is where he absoutely belongs. On a strange and almost-hurtful day a few weeks ago I found one beautiful thing in Seoul; surely enough to prevent a Gomorrah, that one beautiful thing in such a city. It was a pile of novels by Philip K. Dick, whose writing is these days much more easily gotten, at least in the nation’s capital. And so, responding to several years’ curiosity, I purchased The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and set it upon my shelf beneath such random books as …
I won’t say what happiness is…
… but happiness can be when you find yourself in bar in a strange country hollering out cheers in the local language and dancing with some hilarious tubby local girl who’s come up and grabbed you because it’s her big song, and when you look about and see the only other couple dancing in the bar is Thai and Kathleen and you holler attack, she joins you at full strength in a tango-styled joust-assault on them, clasped hands slamming into the couple’s sides… which is responded to with another attack in kind, until it all dissipates into silly laughter and …
Wait, Should I Be Angry?
Last week, I was laughing at Shawn being so annoyed… some of his perky young sophomore students, when leaving his classroom, saw me hanging around, waiting for him to finish up so I could give him back his tape machine. These girls stopped and went, “Oooh!” I said, “What?” “You is handsome man!” they said. One of them expanded upon this: “You look is like the Justin Timberlake!” she said, and winked, giving me the thumbs-up. Now, when I tell the story, I claim that I replied with a wicked tone, “And you look like Janet Jackson, baby, come on …
What I’m Looking At From Here
This is my desktop. The pic’s a balloon animal John made for Koko on her birthday. Gotta get those birthday pics uploaded soon. But anyway, I like this shot, the cheerful sweetness and all that.
New Music (Well, New To Me)
Here are some of the things I’m listening to these days which are new to me, or else which have reappeared in my life again, after a long absence: The Smiths. Myoung Jae loaned me a copy of the CD that collected their singles and it was funny, the conversation that he and Mer and I had about it. “When Myoung told me he’d loaned you the Smiths, I was surprised you hadn’t heard it.” “Yeah,” I said, sometimes it sounds like something coming from me myself, the lyrics feel like they’re coming from inside me.” “Yeah,” Mer replies. “I …
Back Afloat
Well, this site is back up. I’ve changed servers, and I’m working on a makeover for the site, but it turns out I am a lot busier than I thought I’d be. So the total makeover will have to wait for a week or two, once I’ve created the dabang band holding page and gotten a fair bit of the rest of the dabang site ready for the launch (which will coincide with our 2nd album’s release). Then I hope to make this site look exquisite. But for now, it’s a default style with a few mods and some hunks …
On Being A Grown-Up
This week’s Friday Five is mine: The other day I had a talk I had with a co-worker, Shawn, at my workplace. I was talking about an experience at the swimming pool and how I realized, through that experience, that I was actually an adult; I mean, I felt it clearly at that time. It wasn’t the first time that I felt clearly the reality of my adulthood, though. Those kinds of moments come at funny moments, don’t they? My baby sister, who is engaged to be married this summer, commented that she wonders when she will feel grown-up. I …
Desert Island Discs?
This week’s Friday Five question was posed by Gina: So, going back to the original source material responsible for “The Friday Five,” Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity, (and its source material, Desert Island Discs the show): What are your top 5 “desert island” discs? Wow, that’s such a tough question. It’s a funny one, because you know, this weekend I was listening to the soundtrack of High Fidelity. I’d just had a kind of experience that could have been in that movie/book, actually, well, sort of. A kind of weird, degrading, or at least sorta perplexing, experience with a woman, and …
Impeachment in Korea? Oh man…
Wow. Impeachment vote pending in South Korea. The South Korean National Assembly has been adjourned until Friday after supporters of President Roh Moo-hyun blocked an impeachment vote. What do I think? Well, I think this excerpt from the conversation I had with Charlie says it all: Charlie: Oooh. Korean president in trouble. GordSellar: No Mu Hyun? Oh oh… out of touch, lemme look GordSellar: holy shit. nobody has mentioned it all day. wonder if they know at the office. GordSellar: someone must have mentioned it, tho, while I was out. can’t imagine NOBODY knowing about this. Charlie: Embezzling cunt. GordSellar: …
