Inevitable Innovations… (Friday Five)

This week it was my turn to ask the Friday Five Question. Man was it long-winded: I’ve just thought of this question, and perhaps it will be torturously difficult to answer, but… I’ve been reading Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Years of Rice and Salt, a stunning alternate history that raises many questions about history, religion, culture, meaning (and how humans make or find it)… and offers some beautifully thought-out answers or possibilities to these questions. It’s a wonderfully crafted novel, and I highly recommend it. On a more literal level, the novel asks the question: What would have happened if …

Scary People Who Like To Wear Too Much Makeup While On A Mission

Rob, who posted a comment on my friend Marvin’s blog about scary clowns, is right. This is kind of scary. Not just Liberty and Belle, but actually, almost all of the clowns in their “before” shots. They all just kind of look like scary people, except Nikki and David. David looks like a reformed goth drug user, though, and Nikki looks like a girl I used to have a crush on in grade school who ended up being an idiot and a bit of a jerk. Oooh, and she kind of resembles a sex addict I once knew. Who was …

funny evening business

So, I finished updating the look of my website. The structure still needs some serious work, and I want a series of random banners, but for now what’s there will be fine. So here are some questions: Does everyone feel an irresistible urge to dance in his or her apartment alone when listening to Björk’s Post album? Because, yes indeed, I do. And I’m wondering if I’m the only one. (And the Homogenic album does it to me too, but less.) I think I wrote about a hundred hours’ worth of SF game stuff while listening to Björk’s music, by …

Cyber-coolies?

When you call for help with your computer, to book a plane ticket or hotel room, or receive a telemarketer’s call, where is the person you’re talking sitting? According to this article, if you’re calling in English, the person could be just about anywhere. India now has more than 160,000 call-centre workers and expects to have a million by 2008. Raman Roy, who runs a company called Wipro Spectramind, imagines India becoming “the back office of the world.” He had 200 employees three years ago and now has 5,100. They take catalogue orders, book hotel and airline reservations, do some …

My posting these days…

My posting of late has been somewhat erratic. Friday Fives posted on Monday, nothing for a day or two at a time… Why? For one thing, I have been working on figuring out what the next format for this webpage will be. I need to get an update done as I am beginning to be rather tired of the current one. Not just the background, mind you, but the complete structure of the page. So a lot of the time I spend on eclexys now is spent working through that. Secondly, I have been pretty busy otherwise. Trips on the …

(late) Friday Five: What Would You Do With Two Months Paid Vacation?
Where Gord Gets To Feel Suddenly Blessed

Craig produced this week’s Friday Five topic: The biggest advantage to being a teacher is the time off in the summer. Yeah, the annual salary isn’t the best, but I get two friggin’ months off a year! Not to mention two weeks for Christmas, a week for Thanksgiving, Spring Break, and other assorted days off. If you were paid for two months of not going to work, what are five things you would do with your time off? This is the time when I say with a big grin, that this will happen to me every four months in my …
