My Eye and Pumpkin

I had my good eye tested today. Doc says I have some condensation in the vitreous (sp?) fluid in my eye, and that this is unusual for someone of my age (usually we see that in people in their 50s), but that I shouldn’t worry too much and that it won’t bug me after I get used to it. To be honest, I’m a little doubtful about the diagnosis, for a few reasons — one, the behaviour of the spots I’ve been seeing in my peripheral vision don’t seem to be behaving the way I think floaters in the viterous …

More Pre-Clarion

The most recent book I’ve read for my pre-Clarion preparations is Brown Girl in the Ring, by Nalo Hopkinson. Because I haven’t had much exposure to the pronunciation and dialect being used by the characters in a lot of the dialogue, I had a lot of trouble hearing the voices clearly in my head. When I heard Hopkinson reading (if you can get this Realaudio stream to open, you can hear her too, reading an excerpt from what I am pretty sure is her second novel, Midnight Robber), it helped me to get a lot better sense of the way …

Teacher’s Day

It’s teacher’s day in Korea. You know, like it was Mother’s Day in North America yesterday? (Yes, I had a lovely chat with my Mum, but didn’t post about the day since she never reads my website.) Well, today it was teacher’s day. Our students here are really very sweet. They held a party for the occasion, for the professors in the department, which was sweet in itself. (I felt badly arriving late, but I’d had class, and it went overtime, and then I helped a student sign up for her classblog, something she should have done 2.5 months ago, …

Beleaguered Grad Students of the Future… Don’t Bother!

While emailing a friend, I was reminded of a funny thing that happened once in a Korean newspaper. The band I used to play with was interviewed by a newspaper reporter — I can’t remember if it was the guy with the funny hair, or maybe the very pretty girl because of whom the word “reporter” became a euphemism for a “very pretty girl” in the band thereafter. Anyway, each band member was interviewed in turn, and when my turn came around, I was asked about my other interests. I stated that I’d been working on a book about the …

Intelligent Life?

Out on the web (actually, on a minor mailing list I’ve got a sub to), someone was complaining about the apparent absence of intelligent life out there in space. Sadly, my first thought was, “Look, it’s hard enough to find on Earth, and you need to find more of it out there?” Come on, you know I’m right.

Pre-Clarion Readings, Part the Next…

I posted quite a while back after I’d read Maureen McHugh’s Half the Day is Night, that I was trying to get through some more books by some of my soon-to-be-teachers. I had a goal of reading two books by each teacher, minimum, by the time I arrive in Seattle, but it’s looking more and more unlikely. McHugh’s not a problem, as I think I’ve read about half of her published body of work — some of Mothers & Other Monsters, Mission Child, and Necropolis (though much of that first book mentioned is available online, and I spent a chunk …

The Rest of Semester

I’ve been looking for a way to work in a podcast into one of my classes, especially the Media English class, but there just wasn’t room this time around. However, I did a slight overhaul of my rest-of-semester-plans with some of my students. Here are the results: Students in my Media English class are making presentations. This is for most of them in lieu of the Media Diaries which they were supposed to start keeping in Week 2, but which most of them never really started. It adds a little to the workload, since they’re supposed to be getting their …

Out the Window, Over The Fence

I hear a baby screaming as loud as it can, crying and crying for something. A woman and man in the same room, screaming at one another. Slapping sounds, more screaming, and the baby wailing with redoubled efforts. Him, yelling even louder. More slapping sounds. A thud. Her screaming too. More baby-wailing, until it all calms down and all I can hear is the person practicing a passage from some piano etude, somewhere out there. And people think hell is a place people end up after they die. I’m pretty sure hell can be just out my window, and over …
