Where the Wild Beers Are…

A few brewing-related events lately warrant a post. First, I ended up supplying the beer for a party hosted by Soyeon Jeong and her husband Dongjin Lee. She posted about the party here, with a photo (though all the faces are blacked out for some reason… privacy, I guess). I haven’t said much about it here, so I’ll just say I had a great time, it was fun to geek out, talk SF (and other stuff) and it was fun to see so many people enjoying my beer. Anyway, there were a few bottles of IPA left over, which I …

Beer Festival (at Homeplus) and man, VB sucks!

So, a guy I know at work (hi Dave!) alerted me to the fact that the local Homeplus (a grocery store chain) is holding a “beer festival” which means 5 bottles of a number of imported beers were on sale for for $10-ish. (Probably more like $12, but we think of W10,000 as about $10 here.) He specifically noted that Paulaner Hefeweissen was among those beers, and it turned out to be the only beer worth it, unless you have fond nostalgic reasons to want to drink Singha outside Thailand. (I figure there’s a reason why Beerlao — the Laotian …

Coming Up: Beer Festival, June 12th

So Rob at homebrewkorea.com has organized a homebrewing SMaSH-off festival. If you’re not a homebrewer, you likely have no idea what SMaSH means, but it’s simple: Single Malt and Single Hop It’s a special kind of challenge that homebrewers take upon themselves, to keep things simple, and focus on their brewing techniques, instead of mucking about adding extra grains or other stuff for effects. Anyway, there are two parts to the event: the first half is for the brewers, who will sample one anothers’ beer and and talk shop. That’s already booked solid, but for most readers, unless you’re a homebrewer …

A Fleeting Update Redux Redux Redux

I’ve been insanely busy, with a guest visiting, so not much blogging going on. Next week is the University festival, as well, but I’ll be going on a trip during part of the week, and expect not much blogging then. However, I’ll do some updates and program them to show up for the next week or so, asI have things to say, just not much time to say them. In the meantime, those following my brewing adventures will be happy to note  that the sour mash I did last week actually worked much better than I thought, and that the …

“mash aigre”?

This weekend is busy, I have cleaning up and stuff to do, but I absolutely had to get some serious brewing done as well. So I did the very first step, and I’m about to do one more thing and get it done, and the do the stuff I have to do, like cleaning up, laundry, and grading. (Oh, and wandering off to someone else’s computer to try get my Emart order sent off too. I’m pretty sure there’s something with my current installation of Internet Explorer 6.0, but I can’t seem to fix it.) Anyway, pardon my French in …

Wow, JAO Now…

Well, today’s a bit day for brewing stuff, as I have a few things to get done/out of the way before the weekend arrives, and because I decided to give myself a little fun to make up for the frustration I’m having with Emart’s website. (I’ve been ordering groceries online without real problems for over a year, but suddenly nothing is working again. Well, no, that’s not quite right. Rather, when I select my address for shipping, the dialog tells me I haven’t selected an address and can I please input one again?) It seems something has been changed in …

With a Slice of Orange, and What’s Planned

Just before we flew to Indonesia, Miss Jiwaku and I made a strong Scottish ale with some chocolate flavoring. Well, in theory it should have picked up a chocolate flavoring, from the cocoa we put into it. In reality, it was not so chocolatey at all. The only property the beer seems to have picked up from the cocoa is bitterness, in fact. I was trying to figure out how to serve it, therefore, and stumbled upon something: it was missing a balance for the bitterness — some sort of sweetness and acidity. My first response was to squirt a …
