Another Darwin Award Nominee (well, if he keeps at this…)

Yoga is no defense against sharks. That’s right. I know. It’s unbelievable. Thanks for breaking this shocking news, Adam. As if it weren’t self evident. No, this “scientist” learned the hard way: Tv cameras have captured the agonising moment when a 350lb bull shark attacked a man convinced yoga would protect him from one of nature’s most dangerous predators. The shark’s razor-sharp teeth tore a chunk out of scientist Erich Ritter’s leg as he stood in waters off a Bahamian beach that had been heavily baited with fish parts, it was revealed yesterday. … He had persuaded himself that special …

No Chlorine

Today I killed off some of my stress and some time at the Jim Jil Bang. This is a marvelous Korean version of a spa, at sane prices. You pay a little money and you can not only use the public baths (though, sadly, there seems to be no mud bath these days), but also the temperature controlled, semi-quiet relaxation area. It may seem strange to pay money to bathe with other people, and then sit in a T-shirt and shorts in warm rooms or in large open spaces with people lying on the floor sleeping or chatting… but it’s …

Chlorine

Well, I finally found the time to get over to the campus pool yesterday. I swam for about an hour, but it was not like I used to swim. I had to stop a lot… having missed out on near-daily practice for a couple of months, I have gained a few kilograms back and I’ll gone soft… so I think I shall swim daily, perhaps even twice daily once I have my strength back. The water is pretty chlorinated, I guess. It didn’t taste how I remember chlorinated pools tasting, but when I did the backstroke, I got a fair …

Kyo Shil Technique

Here are some notes I’ve jotted into my brain about teaching English as a required subject to undergrad students. Coming Down Hard Can Help. The other day in the classroom I was trying to do attendance. There were a few students near the front who were very polite, went quiet and listened. Well, I halted the roll call. The people in the back kept talking. Finally, I yelled, “Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa!” which is the Korean equivalent of a somewhat harsh, “Hey you!” Then I wrote the words polite and impolite on the board and taught them what they were being, and what …

Friday Five…

What be yer favorite ports o’ call? Where would ye want to hoist a mug’o’rum, were ye given a large pile ‘o’ booty to finance yer stay? I may not be an official Friday Five member, but sometimes the questions are interesting. I’m going to be more specific than some of the other people who posted about this. I’m going to talk about establishments… 1. Coffee Beans, a little coffee shop in Iksan, South Korea. It’s the best coffee shop in town. Now, wait, which one am I talking about? There are two, an old one where I have lots …

Seoul Update

Okay, so here’s the weekend in a nutshell. I decided not to come to Seoul until Saturday, but I’d made plans to meet up with my friend Sun Hwa so I caught the 6:30 bus to Seoul. That was so that we would be able to meet in Apgujeong around 11:00; but first, had to hurry to the Nakwon Sanga, where I needed to get some repairs on my sax. I got to the Nakwon Sanga by about 9:45, but the shop was very busy, and then when the shop owner finally got a chance to sit down with me …

Poll

I added a poll to this site, down on the lower end of the right sidebar. Vote today! And, I’ve just checked the results. I am flattered that someone actually voted for “all of Gord.” How sweet. Who was it? Wait, no don’t tell me. I may not want to know. Well, but maybe I do. Er… This weekend is busy, but I think after this weekend I shall have to redecorate my Korean-language blog, as it’s been neglected enough. I never realized how much a change in style can affect one’s mood toward posting on one’s blog. Hm.

Not Really Her Bum

Before you get too riled up: that’s not really her bum. This is a Japanese product that’s on the market. The skirt has a picture of a bum printed on it. I found this on David Galbraith’s site. Sometimes what Koreans say about Japan goes too far, but sometimes I have to agree and say something very weird and vaguely sinister is going on over there in Tokyo. Certainly not all bad, but… kind of… well, hmmm.
