Oddly, last night, one of my students asked me the other day whether I’d chosen to teach the book and movie V for Vendetta in our Media English class because I wanted to preach anarchism to the students, or for some other reason. She was surprised when I responded that believing unquestioningly in anything that has an -ism or -ian at the end is dangerous, and that mostly I’d chosen it because it seemed like an interesting book and one that had been recently adapted to film format. She said she got the impression from me that anarchism is something …

New Look (But A Bit Hairy For Now)
My site has a new look, in keeping with the fact I’m actually giving out my URL when I publish stories. More changes are to come, but I can finally unveil the (mostly-ripped-off) look. Now, time to get away from my computer for a bit. Things to do: add workout tracker postings to footer filter several post categories from the “main” blog page add a “front page” with a slightly different template — something slightly less bloggy for that matter, edit the non-blog page template to be a little less bloggy in the same way do up a few more …
Post Levels
Well, now I remember why I quit using “Private Posts” for subscribers only: there’s something of a conflict between the plugin that facilitates that, and some other unknown plugin, and/or my template. So until I move to my new template — which won’t happen till my back is okay and I have time to sit at the computer and hack away at it — no more private posts.
Au Privave
Not a jazz post. Just a note: I’ve posted a few things on private setting. If you sign in, you can see them. Or friends signed in at livejournal can also see them on my LJ, which mirrors my content here. Sensitive subjects or private ones.
News Rage
Lately I’ve been experiencing something new to me: news rage. It’s not the stories in the newspaper that get me. Rather, it’s the Korean news stories that never make it to the English newspapers that get my blood boiling. Stories about teenaged girls being raped and left to die from exposure in the cold, for example; or about a desperate family approaching cops, begging them to help find their kidnapped daughter who is in the neighborhood, and being yelled at for interrupting some fucking cop’s precious sleep — only to find the daughter the next day, raped (of course) and …
Derridian Nonsense, Story Idea
You know, I decided to give Derrida one more try, by perusing a bit from Of Grammatology — the bit collected in A Derrida Reader: Between the Blinds, edited by Peggy Kamuf. The only thing that resonated with me was a bit of a footnote, which I’ll quote here: Linear writing has therefore indeed [“]constituted, during many millennia, independently of its role as conserver of the collective memory, by its unfolding in one dimension alone, the instrument of analysis out of which grew philosophic and scientific thought. The conservation of thought can now be conceived otherwise than in terms of …
Worse Again…
Just nerve pain. Walking seems to help a little. More real content coming soon, including some big news as soon as the contract is inked. Until then, here’s my girlfriend’s Meez to amuse you. Good thing she really does love nerds.
Better Now
I’m not totally recovered from my back pains, but things are much better now. Those who are paying attention to my sidebar might have noticed I’ve been doing a tremendous amount of reading in the last week, at least compared to usual. I’m caught up on my subscriptions to F&SF and InterZone, with one issue of Fantasy left to go, and I’ve also finished several whole books in the last week, too. This is a good thing, even if it took a strained muscle in my back to remind me that I can and should read a lot, and that …
Ow Ow Ow
Back pain. Doing better. Not writing or posting much. That’s why. Reading a lot, though, while stuck on my back doing stretches and resting my weary back muscles. I’ll update on recent readings when I am feeling better… as well as launch into revisions of “Lester Young”, post long-overdue crits to friends, and start in on a new short story somewhere between Lovecraftian horror and War On Terror ™. Also, realized I’d started my story “Jing the Quae” way too early in the timeline… the real story happens months after the end of the period of time I drafted as …
Question Popped
No date set, but she did say yes, and this time, since she’s wearing a ring, it really actually officially counts. I asked a couple of days ago (on Wednesday), but we were waiting till I could call my mom on mother’s day to let her know about it. Yay! PS: Yes, for those curious, it’s an aquamarine. It seemed like the best choice between all of her and my possible birthstones, an older tradition we decided to go with because we like it better.
