UPDATE (19 Dec. 2014): Speaking of Speech is still available: in fact, in a new edition. It’s been expanded, and now there’s a teacher’s guide, but I haven’t gotten a look at it. The original book was a bit Japan-specific, and I suspect it might rub some students the wrong way, but maybe that’s been eliminated from the more recent edition. In any case, you can see the newer book here. ORIGINAL POST: Alistair asked what textbooks I’m using in new courses this semester, and I typed out a rather long comment before I realized it would probably be better to …

A National Emergency
No, not in America. In Korea. The Onion-style. I’ve often thought about an expat-focused version of The Onion, and Peemil wrote an article that would fit into that absolutely perfectly: Korean Man Dislikes Kimchi Immensely: SEOUL: A nationwide emergency intervention is being planned to force Mr Bak to eat the nations signature food after it was revealed yesterday that he doesn’t like it. The allegations came to light while Mr Bak was attending dinner with work colleagues on Saturday evening. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Mrs Lee who is a colleague. “We were all sitting around the table discussing what …
MMORPG: Eve-Online – a massive multiplayer online roleplaying space game
So I spent the afternoon blundering away at my computer, trying to figure out why I couldn’t get the client for the EVE MMORPG running. I guess, in the end, it was a video driver issue, which is weird since I had the newest driver installed. But anyway, once I finally got it going, I found myself spellbound. Now, I’m one of the guys in the office who sits there shaking his head when people get into deep conversations about strategy for what I consider cheesy online military strategy games. When I hear the clarion call of cheap-sounding fake trumpets …
Deliciousnesses
From La Vieille Europe (which may be spelled wrong), a shop on St-Laurent in Montreal, I brought back to Lime some chocolates of the most unusual sort. They are made with really good-quality chocolate, but also with something unusual, whether spicy of just flavourful, ground up and mixed in. The company that makes them is a Belgian one called Dolfin and let me tell you, they spared no imagination when coming up with these flavours to mix in with their chocolate: Pink Pepper, Hot Masala, Early Grey, Aniseed, and Fresh Ginger are just a few of the flavours. The only …
Whew
Not only did I manage to import all of my old entries from eclexys, but I also have a set of categories from there. Whew, that ported over fine. Now the only problem–and it’s not so much of a problem, really–is a huge pile of unfinished draft posts that stare at me in the face every time I log into the writing section of this blog. Maybe I’ll blog back and finish a few of those, or maybe I’ll end up deleting some. Anyway… the blog is mostly back. And I’ve started using Elvgren as my template, for now. I’ll …
