Do yourself a favor. When the world is annoying you, go to Youtube and search the phrase I used on for the header of this post: “I like turtles” — that should be good for at least twenty minutes of fun.

Hilarious Hermione Horror
One of my Media English students — I’m not sure which one, though I’ll find out on Thursday I suppose — uploaded made this hilarious trailer remix (link for LJers, the video is embedded below) as a final project in our class. (They’re doing media remixes, as a kind of break from all the studying of Lawrence Lessig we did this half of semester.) Normally, a short trailer remix is something I’d be so-so about for such a big project, but (minor English glitches aside) this is pretty damned good, if you ask me! (Good enough, indeed, that I had …
Linux/Nethead Injokery
I haven’t actually been working on “A Killing in Burma” lately — the semester has kind of turned into a swarm of bumblebees and I haven’t had much time to do anything besides school stuff — but I did get a little work done on my draft of “Ten Spikes and a Hammer,” a story I’m working on about, well, more WWII-era geomantic warfare as remembered by an old man in the late 80s in a rather different American from the one we all remember. (Or don’t remember, as the case may be.) But when Lime and I were puttering …

Kickin’ It in Iksan
Okay, this isn’t a song about Iksan, but it does bring back memories of the days when I lived in a small place with, um, limited entertainment facilities, and was surrounded by Westerners mostly just as bewildered about what to do with themselves in their free time. (And for you LJ readers, yeah, I embedded the video below on my site, but you’re missing nothing if you follow the link.)
A Little Piece of Heaven
It’s the first day of the semester, and things are a little chaotic but mostly fine. The students in my Monday morning 9:00 am class seemed to get most of the jokes, or at least laugh in the right places — humor is a great test of comprehension, you see. The office is still a little frantic in getting the disorganization reorganized into, um, a semblance of organization, but things are going. I haven’t been posting because I’m working on several things at once (a rewrite, a draft, an article, course preparations, website template stuff, and domestic stuff), and haven’t …
Where I’m From Is Not Flat
Um, or at least you shouldn’t say it aloud. Ha! (LJers, pop over for a funny video about how to survive in Saskatchewan, and what not to do when you’re there.) Hilarious, though totally silly. We know it’s flat. We like it that way. Well, except the winter wind…
Love Detector Phone Test and Voight-Kampff Job Interviews
So there’s a new service available in Korea through cell phone operator KTF that will supposedly analyze voice patterns to see whether a lover is honest, attentive, passionate, or whatever. The first response most people have is one I share: yeah, right. As in, I doubt we’re quite at the point where such an analysis can reasonably be made from a single cell phone call. But that’s not such an interesting observation. I mean, someday we doubtless will be at that point. We’ll be able to analyze voice prints (and other peripheral sound, like breathing patterns, for example) and compare …
Gordon Sellar: This is Your Life! & A Rock Song About Max Planck
Long ago in a noosphere far, far away, I actually played the double bass in a kids’ orchestra, which was slightly humiliating since the lead violinists were 7 and 8 years old and I was in middle school. Anyway, I played double bass pretty good for someone who never quite learned to read the bass clef properly until later. (I knew that this dot on the staff meant that position on the fingerboard, or that alternate position, or even this third one, but I didn’t know what the name of the note was.) Maybe it was rebellion that led me …
The People’s Mario
Check out hilarious little flash animation, in which Mario is almost the perfect Soviet-style hero.
