Reprint in Lightspeed!: “The Incursus by Asimov-NN#71″

gordsellar2 Comments

UPDATE (23 Feb 2019): I’m a bit late on this, because I was traveling for a pair of events in Los Angeles and Riverside that I’ll blog about soon, but anyway, an update: this story reprint is now live for non-subscribers over on Lightspeed’s website!  Original Post: I’m a bit late on this, thanks to the Lunar New Year holiday over here in Korea, but I’m very pleased to announce that my short story “The Incursus by Asimov-NN#71″ is appearing as a reprint in the February 2019 issue of Lightspeed, alongside a lineup of work by Matthew Baker, Elizabeth Bear, …

The Apex Book of World SF, Volume 5

gordsellar0 Comments

Since the Apex Book of World SF series launched a decade ago, I’ve always wished that I could help get a Korean story into the series. Well… that’s finally happened.  In the forthcoming fifth volume of the series, edited by Cristina Jurado (and with Lavie Tidhar as the series editor), that’s finally happened. My co-translation with Jihyun Park of Boyoung Kim’s tale of Lamarckian evolution, mythic Korean beasts, and metamorphosis, “An Evolutionary Myth,” will be reprinted, alongside what looks to be another fascinating and amazing collection of work from around the world.  Preorders are now open, and you can get …

Write-a-Thon-A-Gain…

gordsellar0 Comments

Though I’m keeping a low profile and all, I am participating in Clarion West’s Write-a-Thon this year. I signed up a little late, because I wasn’t sure whether I could really get much done during the write-a-thon itself: the timing, as always, is a little tough for me. (The first week of the workshop is always final exams week for most universities here in Korea, and in my current job, that’s followed by a four week long summer intensive course. On top of all that, our kid’s going to be in hospital next week at the end of the month, …

Writing Stuff

I haven’t posted about my writing, but that doesn’t mean nothing’s going on. In fact, as I’ve already mentioned on Facebook and Twitter, one of my stories from last year is a finalist in the AnLab poll for best short story published in Analog during 2017. The competition is stiff, of course, but that just makes it more flattering. (It’s my second year in a row to be a finalist in this vote.) All the stories are available at the link above: feel free to read them and vote for mine the ones you like best.  Beyond that, you can …

“Focus” in Neil Clarke’s Best Science Fiction of the Year, Volume 3

gordsellar0 Comments

So, Neil Clarke recently published the table of contents of the Best Science Fiction of the Year, Volume 3, collecting his picks for the best stories of 2017. To my immense happiness, my short story “Focus,” which was originally published in Analog, will be included in the volume… and in very good company. It’s not just an honor to have my work appear in a Year’s Best collection by such a discerning editor, but to have it appear alongside work by some of the best authors around today—and some authors whose work I was reading back when I started writing …

So About That Novel I’ve Been Writing…

gordsellar7 Comments

Having finished a draft I finally feel is, well, finished (in its way), I guess this is as good a time as any to jot down some thoughts on the project so far.  Those not interested in a look at the fumbling, stumbling, and very difficult process it took me to get to the end of my first possibly-decent novel draft ought to skip this post.

Ride the Star Wind, and More…

gordsellar0 Comments

Ride the Star Wind, a short story collection combining space opera, the Lovecraftian, and the cosmic weird, is now available: You can get it from the publisher, or get a paperback or ebook from Amazon.com. It includes a bunch of great, weird stories by great, weird people, some of whose names will surely be familiar to those who read Lovecraftian fiction. Among them is my own story, “Vol de Nuit,” which is one of the few space-opera-esque things I’ve actually written. I’ve got some story notes up, as usual, under the Story Notes section of this site. Nick Gucker, who …

Perspective… and Pizza

A while ago I mentioned being in the “home stretch” on the book I’m writing. A bunch of people were very encouraging when I said that, which, well, encouraged me. (Thanks, everyone.) Thing is, I still am in that home stretch, pretty close to where I was at the time I made that comment, in fact. I’m kind of stuck there. Not writing-stuck: I would be done the draft if it wasn’t for the exigencies of life. A recurrent, won’t-go-away ear infection has been gnawing on our son, and I developed bronchitis (seemingly the same damned bug), just as a …

Notable Work and in the Home Stretch

gordsellar0 Comments

So I just got word that my story “The Incursus, by Asimov-NN#71,” published in Big Echo last summer, got an honorable mention in the 2017 volume of The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy! That’s pretty encouraging, considering the volume has a number of great stories by wonderful writers.  Positive feedback helps when you’re in the home stretch of drafting a book, because that’s when you’re at the point of thinking, “Is this thing ever coming going to come together? How?!?” You can preorder a copy on Amazon anytime, yes, even now.   Oh, and I am, indeed, in the home stretch in …
