My First Car Accident (Er, Okay, Second)

Edit: By the light of day, I realize that what I’ve written up below was my second car accident; the first happened on the first night I went out driving with my dad, the day I received my learner’s license in Middle School. The similarities to this case are a bit surprising: it was also 100% the other guy’s fault, and it happened in an empty place. (A mall parking lot, after the mall had closed: he reversed into our car without even turning on his lights. Somehow, I spent years hearing this was my fault from my mom, in contradiction …

Goodbye 2015

It’s not a big surprise I’m over a week late seeing the year off. It’s been that kind of a year, and I’m kind of glad to see 2015 go. Not that there weren’t wonderful moments, terrifying and vertigo-inducing and lovely and amazing. There definitely were, like this one almost exactly 76 days ago: And we all have a lot to be grateful for. As I write this, a few days behind schedule, our boy has been with us for 75 days, and just turned himself over, pushup style, for the first time in his life. (Mrs. Jiwaku called me excitedly …

The Fullness or Emptiness of the Glass

I’ve mostly backed off “serious” discussions on Facebook, with the exception of an occasional comment here and there. It’s not just because Noeul keeps me busy: It’s because while I like being able to say hi to friends occasionally, and get a whiff of news in the SFF world, share pictures and tidbits of news, and that kind of thing—and because some of my friends seem to prefer to use Facebook Messenger to email—I find that almost anything else is just a black hole sucking away my energy and time.

In Other News…

It’s been such a busy time I haven’t updated much, but a lot has been going on, and not all of it relates to poo, diapers, 3:00am feedings, and baby wipes… There’s been some movement on several fronts, in fact: fiction writing & publication, RPG/game writing, and a workshop I attended just before Noeul was born. Publication News: Back in late September I got my copy of Cthulhu Fhtagn!, which contains my story “The Return of Sarnath” alongside new, original works by a number of Lovecraftian notables, as well as some authors new to me. Here’s the copy I got in …

Noeul

The last week is a blur, in part because while this was what we did on Friday, the 23rd of October: That was just outside the ob/gyn office, where we’d just been told the baby had to come out by the due date… which was November 1st, incidentally. He must have been listening, since the little guy decided to show up a week early, on the evening of the 25th of October: As one friend noted, he’s already giving people the side-eye.

구름나그네

So, a few days ago, I got my driver’s license in Daejeon. Just barely, but I got passed the exam, and was licensed to drive in South Korea. I could, in fact, have immediately gotten an International Driving Permit as well, if I’d known. This, of course, is terrifying. I hadn’t, until recently, driven a car in twenty years. But it’s a nice change: certainly, the expansion of our mobility is a huge help. Not that it wasn’t an entirely bizarre, baffling experience, getting the license—about which I’ll write more soon, I’m sure. But there’s perks to having it, like how, last night, we …

Memories of the Sword (협녀: 칼의 기억)

We usually try to avoid going to films on the weekend in Jochiwon, because the cinemas are crowded and because of the countrified behaviour of the locals during screenings really annoys us. (It’s not quite as ridiculous as in Saigon, though: I haven’t seen anyone surf the net on an iPad all the way through a film here yet…) However, we decided to go to a film last weekend because it was Mrs. Jiwaku’s birthday, and since the film both looked interesting, and had sold fewer tickets than the other films showing, we decided to give it a shot. In our experience, there’s an uncanny-valley-like effect in Korean cinema: the bell-curve applies on …
