Life is so utterly hectic that I’ve barely had time to relax, let alone write any of the posts I was planning to this week. However, I’ve now really gotten into the swing of this office hours thing. (Of course, so are my students — I had two visitors last week and appointments with two more this week — so we’ll see how far I get with getting anything else done here.) I was joking with the secretaries this afternoon that having office hours like this is a bit like prison: gotta do the time, after all, and all that’s …

A Hundred and What?

Happy Birthday to G
Yes, March 4th was my birthday. I’m posting on the 5th, but only barely. I had no classes, but I hiked the mountain and the most entertaining moment was running into a crazy Christian lady who segued so suddenly to “Do you believe in Jesus? Believe in Jesus so you can go to Heaven!” than I was confused — I thought she was talking about art, as the Korean word for art sounds similar to how Koreans say the name “Jesus.” She thought I didn’t know who Jesus was, and immediately pantomimed the scouring, crown of thorns, and crucifixion. Finally, …
Project Online Grocery Ordering: Success! (#1?)
Well, I promised an update when I finally managed to make an online grocery order all on my own, and today, that was my biggest achievement. The lucky site was…. Emart. As I related a while back (first here, then here), Homeplus rapidly fixed one text field on its website when Lime ranted about how I wasn’t able to register, and then was told, “Oh, sorry, nothing can be done!” and then emailed the Korean Head Office. (Suddenly a software change was possible… but it was sloppy, and while foreigners now can register at Homeplus/Tesco, they can’t actually buy anything, …
Ugh!
Okay, turning on the Lifestream updates thing on my blog was a mistake. I can’t delete the one that was posted — even after turning the plugin off, it seems locked somewhere I cannot edit — but anyway, that won’t be happening again. Yuck!
Lifestream Update for The Day
Catch up with my various feeds, if you’re not following them already. (I won’t do this regularly, but it seems I can’t delete this now!)
Things to Post About
Last night at the launch of the Seoul Science Fiction & Fantasy Library — an amazing project I’ll post about soon — the writer/translator Jeong So-Yeon reminded me that I hadn’t yet posted about our experience at SOAO Workshop up on Sobaeksan, which has prompted me to write this post of things I need to post about soon. Not all of them are related to SF in Korea, but a few are. The KASI/SOAO workshop on Sobaeksan The Seoul Seoul Science Fiction & Fantasy Library An article idea on the social economics of reputation and the translation of genre literature …
Studying the Expat Experience
Hey, you, foreign teacher living in Seoul/Incheon/Gyeonggi-do! Go help a scholar find out more about the expat experience in Korea by filling out this survey. I found most of the questions on this survey interesting, though a few (such as assumptions of what “nationality” means among expatriates) were a bit oddball to me. (Via Hub of Sparkle)
Got a Kick Out Of…
A few things I got a kick out of in the last few days: Seeing a drunken old man jogging in place on the express commuter train out of Seoul. He jogged for ten or fifteen minutes, stopped, rolled his head around for a while, then jogged some more. I seemed to be the only person taking any notice at all of his performance. It was amusing. Seeing my name on a few of the “Here’s who I nominated!” lists for the Hugos and Campbell Award. I didn’t see a lot of these, but I saw a few, which is …
