Divestiture

The last few posts I’ve made, have been procrastination as much as anything. I hate moving, I hate packing, I hate dealing with all my stuff. It’s always been so much easier for me to just buy more stuff instead of dealing with all the stuff I already have… and therein lies the rub. I exaggerate slightly how much of a pack rat I am, but not much. I look with something vaguely akin to horror at the piles of crap of which I have divested myself. Not that it was a rampant case of buy-buy-buy, but rather, I bought things …

Trashy

Mrs. Jiwaku and I have had a crazily busy week. I’ve spent the last few weeks sorting through my books, because of all my worldly posessions, my books are the most numerous.  However, clothing and papers that haven’t been sorted through in ages come a close second! Came, actually. I’m terrible at getting rid of things. Just let me paint a picture like this: among the boxes I left in the attic, I found letters to George W. Bush–regarding the invasion of Iraq–that were written back when I was still in Iksan, that is, in 2003. I found the flight …

On The Way Out…

So, we’re now at two weeks until the day we’re supposed to leave our apartment. There’s an unspecified number of days after that, during which we’ll still be in Korea, but not in our apartment. I’m not sure where we’ll be, but it won’t be on campus. This means we’re in the thick of packing, sorting, discarding stuff, but also trying to deal with paperwork, legal stuff, and a bunch of other things. I’m frankly a little worried about whether we’re going to manage to get it all done–from selling off our remaining furniture, to clearing out the books that …

Hitched

Well, I just realized that while those on Facebook all know about it, I haven’t mentioned it here, so: I got hitched last weekend. That’s right, Miss Jiwaku is now Mrs. Jiwaku–and in a rather literal way, too, since the inscription in our wedding bands is (in Korean) Jiwaku. For those wondering, that’s an Indonesian term of endearment that translates literally as “my soul” (but which couples use). I haven’t updated because I’ve been busy: both of our mothers were able to come to Korea for the occasion, and we’ve been pretty busy showing my mother around, meeting with Mrs. …

The Books of 2012

My Library at LibraryThing One might think that the animated parade above of the covers of the fifty-some books (plus a couple I’m partway through at the moment, which I’m counting since they were and will continue to be huge reading projects) is not bad for a year’s reading… but if you look closely at my list of books (there’s a list below), you’ll find a couple of things worth noting. Some of the books are short; some are game books (which are usually short as well); some are slim tomes of verse. I actually felt like I didn’t get …

Eleven Years…

By the way, it’s been eleven years since I landed in Korea. Okay, really, I arrived on 30 December. It’s still 30 December in a lot of the world, so I’ll just ignore the fact I’m a few hours late on Korean time. Yeah, it’s been eleven years since I flew across the Pacific Ocean for the first time, arrived in Incheon International Airport, and took a bus down to Jeonju Iksan, to be met by someone I’d never met–but whom I’d heard about through my friend Joleen. Eleven years is a long, long time, considering that when I first …

New Look

I spent the weekend, off-and-on, working on the theme for this site. I’m not completely happy with the result —  there are a few things I need to hammer out — but I feel like I’ve spruced up the place adequately to take down the Maintenance sign and let the site be open to the public again. While I was at it, I reorganized some of the material here. I’ve implemented redirects for pages I removed or combined, and they should be working–the pages I had up for every musical project available for download are now all on the Music …

Talent Night, Part 3: What I Learned Hosting a Dread Game

This entry is part 3 of 4 in the series Talent Night: My First Time Running a Game of Dread

Note: this is the second third post in a series. In the previous post, I discussed my long, long hiatus from RPG gaming, why I chose the game Dread for my first game in a decade and a half, and a bit about the game mechanics. You might want to start there. Alright, so I learned a lot of things playing this game: some about Dread as a game system, some about character motivation, some (mostly re-learned, to be honest) about dealing with newbie players. And some stuff not related to any of those things. Some of these may be obvious …
