Trusted Reviewers (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 10)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Where do you go for RPG Reviews? This is a pretty simple question: I google the name of the product and read reviews wherever I see them, supplementing by asking friends about what they’ve heard about the system. But I also do this one thing when I’m reading the reviews:

Gaming Miniseries (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 9)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: What is a good RPG to play for about 10 sessions? Funny fact: I’ve never actually played any RPG for only ten sessions. Or, wait, no, that’s not true: I’ve played a couple, I’ve just never run them that way. The thing about running an RPG in that way—as a sort of miniseries run, or a short term or “single season” campaign, as some are calling it now—is that it requires a couple of things:

Gone… in 120 Minutes? And an Alternate Question… (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 8)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: What is a good RPG to play for sessions of 2 hours or less? Hm, good question, though I’m afraid I don’t hae a lot of answers to offer: I find the optimal time for a session is more like 3-4 hours. I haven’t played many that work at 2 hours, actually. I think Dread can be good and punchy in under two hours. If you have a small group of players who can focus and stay on task, Fiasco can also work. …

The Impact of a Leshy, and the Skinridden PC (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 7)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this:   What was your most impactful RPG session?   Being that this is me, you can probably guess what I’m going to say next, right? Yeah, I have two answers.

Strange Brews

Some beer news, since I haven’t posted anything in ages. It’s now been four years since I’ve made any beer myself, though I am hoping to get a Saison brewed before the end of summer. (It’s hot enough for it, after all!)  But this is a news news post, since there’s been some odd and interesting brewing-related pieces in the news.

Une Saison en Enfer? (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 6)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: You can game every day for a week! Describe what you’d do!    Ha, fat chance of that. Grownups with kids? Not likely. Okay, okay, it’s speculative. Fine. Here’s what I would do:

Ride the Star Wind available for preorder!

Hey, look at that:  The forthcoming Broken Eye Books anthology Ride the Star Wind: Cthulhu, Space Opera, and the Cosmic Weird (edited by Scott Gable & C. Dombrowski) is available for preorders now, over on Amazon.com! It will contain a story of mine titled “Vol de Nuit” that is, well, kind of existential Lovecraftian space horropera. Imagine a raw, bloody Space: 1999 steak mashed into a big plate of Lovecraft  I know, I know, I don’t usually write about spaceship fighter pilots blasting their weapons off into the silent void against implacable, inhuman enemies, though, well… when it’s a Great Old One …

Cover Me! (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 5)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which RPG cover best captures the spirit of the game? I’m not sure my response is particularly useful or interesting, though I find it interesting to think about what I came up with. Here’s a shot at answering it.

Grapevines & Geeksites (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 3)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: How do you find out about new RPGs? I imagine I do it the way most people do now, if they don’t live in a city with an active gamer community.  That is, I have two sources of information: fellow gamers buddies, and the internet.  To be more specific, I have a couple of good friends who’re also RPGers, and who were more firmly ensconced in the hobby when I’d just come back to it. One of them actually suggested I submit …
