In the Hotseat – #RPGaDay 2017, Day 18

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which RPG have you played the most in your life? Taken straight, this is not the most interesting question. My answer is the same as that of many others, I’m guessing: some flavor of D&D.  Or is it?  Technically, I barely “played” any D&D (as a player) at all. I count maybe six sessions spent as a player, divided between the friend who introduced me to the game, a DM I knew in middle school, and someone I knew in undergrad. I played far more …

The Ones I’ve Never Taken Out to Dance (RPGaDay 2017, Day 17)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which RPG have you owned the longest but not played? Today’s answer will be short, because, well: it’s an easy answer:  Until I left Canada, the game I’d owned the longest but never played was Amazing Engine. I had a couple of books for the system—For Faerie, Queen, and Country (which was a neat book in itself) and Kromosome, which was an alright cool cyberpunky type game setting book. Both were designed to use the Amazing Engine game system, which I’ve …

Taken As Written (RPGaDay 2017, Day 16)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which RPG do you enjoy using as is? I touched on this a bit yesterday: it’s not so much for me that there’s any game I would necessarily want to use as-is, so much as that I find there are different degrees of freedom to adapt games to different kinds of play… or that different rulesets are more or less intertwined with settings, since a big part of what I like to do in homebrewing is adding setting material that takes on …

Frankensteining Games (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 15)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which RPG do you enjoy adapting the most? For me, the answer’s easy: it’s D&D. Now, when I say D&D you should bear in mind that the only D&D-type ruleset I have on hand right now is Lamentations of the Flame Princess. (I have a ton of AD&D 1st and 2nd edition stuff back in Canada, but in Korea, despite having about five feet of shelf space devoted to RPG books, the only D&D-type books I have fit into a single shelf.) …

The Session That Changed Everything (#RPGaDay, Day 13)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Describe a game experience that changed how you play.  Um, they all have? I mean, not all, but I learn a lot from every campaign or one-shot I run.  But I think the session that changed how I play the most was back in late 2012, when I was returning to the hobby. It was a session of Fiasco. I wrote up the session at the time, and you can see it here. As for how it’s affected the way I play …

It’s What’s Inside… (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 12)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which RPG has the most inspiring interior art? It bet those who’ve read previous posts in this series know at least some of the answers I’m going to offer. Oh, and one or two of these images might be NSFW, I suppose. Here’s my picks, with some mini-galleries to show off the best examples.  Oh, and this page will probably be a little slow to load. Lots of images, and I think the gallery plugin is preloading the bigger size for when …

Back from the Grave (#RPGaDay 2017, Day 11)

August is RPGaDay month. Yep, a month solid of RPG-related posts, answering these questions: Today’s question is this: Which ‘dead game’ would you like to see reborn? This is an interesting question, and, for me, an odd one. I’ll try provide some answers I think are helpful for thinking about this.

Notable Work and in the Home Stretch

So I just got word that my story “The Incursus, by Asimov-NN#71,” published in Big Echo last summer, got an honorable mention in the 2017 volume of The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy! That’s pretty encouraging, considering the volume has a number of great stories by wonderful writers.  Positive feedback helps when you’re in the home stretch of drafting a book, because that’s when you’re at the point of thinking, “Is this thing ever coming going to come together? How?!?” You can preorder a copy on Amazon anytime, yes, even now.   Oh, and I am, indeed, in the home stretch in …

Website Update Ongoing

Update (8/10/2017): Yeah, that template? It went bye-bye within an hour, when the site slowed to a crawl. Ugh. I’ll find something else. As I say: things are gonna be a mess for a few days.  Original post: If you’re dropping by my webpage, you’ll probably notice it’s a bit of a mess. A bunch of things need modifying or fixing. I’m trying to get this done so that I can reduce the load put on my server, since I got a notice today that I’m once again overloading the shared server. While I’m trying to weed out some unnecessary …
