I couldn’t be prouder of my wife, whose first short film, “The Music of Jo Hyeja” is now available on DVD, as part of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival Classics Vol. 1 Short Film Collection. Well, technically it’s been out a little while, but a week or so ago, I think it was, she received her contributor copies of the DVD. How spectacular: images from all the films adorn the cover, but hers take a prominent place. What’s more exciting to me is: this is South Korea’s first Lovecraftian adaptation to the screen, and it did really well in that capacity. …

I’ve mentioned this on Facebook and Twitter, but my wife has been releasing the films she’s made so far on Youtube, every ten days in July. They’re Korean-language films, but with English (and sometimes other) subtitles. In Sydney? Watch Our Movie!

For those readers in Sydney, the Australian premiere of “The Music of Jo Hyeja” is at Syndney’s genre film festival, Fantastic Planet. It screens at 3pm on the 14th of April, as part of the H.P. Lovecraft vs. Stephen King shorts program. They even used a still shot from “Jo Hyeja” for the webpage for that session of the festival! (Get your tickets here.) Wish we could be there… but we’re working on other projects down here in Saigon!

I apologize for the lack of activity here. I have a lot going on, between working on several writing projects (fiction and scripts alike) and trying to get some stuff done around the house. I mentioned recently that I had “finished” working on the music for “The Music of Jo Hyeja.” Well, last night we well-and-truly finished work on the audio, except perhaps for swapping in one musical track. We went over to Mediact, an organization that exists to help develop and promote the independent film industry in Korea,m teach people who to make films, and help people complete projects without having to sell everything they own. The sound engineers we hired work there, and helped us master the audio for “The Music of Jo Hyeja” for what is probably a lot less money …

The last mention I made of this project was to note that we’d done some recording with the haegeum player from the band 잠비나이 for the soundtrack. Since then, I’ve been off and on constructing music tracks from samples — both of the haegeum, and of other sounds I collected over a 48 hour period: water going down a drainpipe, the hum of car engines, growling, and so on.
