Carla Bley and the Korean Prison Chef

As I live in Korea, this may amuse me more than those in North America. Or not. On what I think is the Carla Bley Band site, which is built on the theme of a musical prison — don’t ask what the heck that is all about — there’s a piece about how a deal was worked out, with Carla Bley scoring a musical residency in in Germany, and the WXW prison in America getting — you got it — a Korean prison chef. I told you it was weird. The rest of the site is bizarre, too. One more …

뒤섞여 있음의 기쁨: Yes, I’m Published in Korean

What does that mean? I’m not quite sure, but Lime said it was something like what I took to mean “Joyful Melding” or something like that. It’s the title that was given to the translation of the article I wrote in English about the Jeonju Sori Festival, which was published in this month’s 문화저저늘 (Culture Journal). Since I didn’t title it myself, the title can only be credited to the translator… Lime says the writing as rendered in Korean is absolutely beautiful, and of course I’m not sure whether that means my writing is good, or whether to credit only …

Bugsmusic Dabang

I know it’s a little late since I quit the band a while ago, but some of you haven’t heard the songs from the more recent CD. I walked into the office to hear one of the songs, which was playing on the office PC. It was being streamed from Bugsmusic, and this is the page where all the tracks can be viewed and streamed from. UPDATE 20 January 2005: That link above doesn’t display all of the songs we have online there, but this one does. And here are links to where you can check out some of my …

New sophistry…

The latest installment in my ongoing discussion of art and aesthetics with Marvin over at New Sophists’ Almanac is now online. IT touches on jazz, hip-hop, evaluating the validity of an art form, what constitutes a “world art form”, and also a suggested experiment regarding the way we look at and evaluate art. Go have a look.

Music Stuff

Here are all those links I was looking for. Last night, Dabang Band opened (without me, due to my damned finger problem) for labelmates Zzam (which I think they’re translating as “Drowsy Music” in English though their name is just a stylized way of writing the verb “sleep” in Korean). Anyway, they were good enough to convince me to buy a copy of their new CD, which doesn’t appear on their own CD (it’s just been released, maybe they haven’t updated yet) but which can be seen and sampled on the website hosted by their label, Cavare. Cavaret is, incidentally, …

Excitement about Fingering!!!

First of all… Get your mind out of the gutter! I mean fingering charts. See, I just bought a flute for my trip to India; flutes are great because they’re compact, light, easy to carry around, and for me it’s a chance to practice an instrument I haven’t tried to play in a long time. I was never very good to begin with, but having started on a pawn shop flute with keys that didn’t seal even after repairs, one shouldn’t be surprised.

Now listen to Han Young Ae

I mentioned listening to some wonderful music on Saturday night. Well, it seems that the gods of the Internet have seen fit to deliver unto my my hard drive the full album Behind Time: A Memory Left in an Alley by Young Ae Han, a somewhat older Korean singer. While my younger friends will probably consider her dated, maybe even a kind of Korean easy listening, I think of her more as a Korean cross between Loreena McKennit, without the faux celticism, and Björk, without the psycho voice. In any case, I liked her songs so much I thought I’d …

Last Night’s Gig

Last night’s show was pretty good. We performed as part of the Dongmun Festival, which is some kind of animation and film festival. We saw the most unusual Korean and Japanese animations, including our band’s apparent favorite, Frank, about a psychotic dog who goes ballistic and even perhaps homicidal when his Hominid-dog friend gets too chatty with a frozen chicken. I want the guy who animated that film to do our next album’s cover art. As Myoung said, “There’s a little bit of Frank in everyone…” Hell, some days there’s a big fat Frank in my saxophone, even. Anyway, we …
